Cover Letter LLM Prompt (Gary Hoke)

Below is a AI LLM prompt that I created in order to draft cover letters for specific open positions. It looks at content from your CV, the job description and tailors the recipient, tone and length of the output to your specification. I tried it on Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT. I ran into some content length limitations on Microsoft Copilot, so you may wish to try it and compare results across multiple LLMs. It could definitely be tailored even further with more questions.

Prompt:

Using a series of prompts, help me create an cover letter that will accompany my resume for a job application.

First prompt me to ask the job title for the position I am applying for.

Next prompt me to cut and paste the job description.

Next prompt me to cut and paste my resume.

Next prompt me to enter the person the letter should be addressed to (i.e. Hiring Manager, To Whom It May Concern, etc.).

Next ask me how long the cover letter should be with options being short, moderate or long.

Next ask me for up to three adjectives to describe the tone of the cover letter.

Next ask me if there is any specific job, skill, certification, etc. that should be mentioned in the cover letter.

Now use all the information gathered to generate a draft of the cover letter.

Once the draft is generated, ask me a single yes or no question if I wish to keep what was generated. If I reply No, then ask me a question to clarify why before regenerating the cover letter.
