[bug]: user emails are not being normalized on registration

We'll need to fix this ASAP. Emails will need to be escaped and converted to lowercase, otherwise, users will not be able to log in.

Although a temporary fix for this bug has been applied at 3c8e01a, I do not have plans for closing this issue. We will certainly need to improve email validation, verification, and normalization.
