We recently started to explore a "command centre" for our local development, which very much looks like this GitHub application.

One key thing that we were exploring is the possibility of having plugins that provide some determinstic commands, instead of letting AI be the "orchestration" layer which can some times be a little hit and miss, be slow, and be token heavy.

Take for example we want "app management", a way for developers (and AI) to start and manage locally runs apps. See there logs, start multiple etc.

Whilst we have a AI skill it can waste time getting the commands just right, reading the outputs etc.

Our vision is therefore pluggable commands that can interact with the chat window and input flow like an AI, but underneath it's code. Determinstic, testable code. It can call out to the agent in the middle of the process to provide the agentic brain that is some times needed in these flows (for example we have another one for pull request creation which fits our flow and is therefore slightly different to that provided OOTB, where we want AI to generate the bodies, but we handle the actual creation etc. because it's much more efficient)
