Long story short: I'm not entirely sure of the exact reasoning behind the DMCA complaint, but GitHub has given me one business day to make the requested changes. Otherwise, they may disable the entire repository. The complaint specifically targets the APK downloads for version 10.4.0, not the source code itself.

I don't get why any random company would file a DMCA complaint against your app. Sounds like an extortion attempt. They may be firing off complaints to see who capitulates.
There are a few solutions here:

1. Find a DMCA expert and see if you can challenge it.
2. Stop hosting here and move to another platform like Codeberg or Gitlab. DMCA may not be applicable to Codeberg.
3. Stop hosting the apk here, and get it hosted somewhere else like IzzyOnDroid, FDroid or APKPure. Then redirect the users over there.

Change the platform of your hosting and redirect us there as someone already suggested because this app is not a choice for people like me because it is my need not a want. I purchased expensive earbuds just to listen music because I literally don't use any social media, watch any movies, web series, anime or anything like that. My average minutes listening per month is 5500+ because I live on music. And I seriously don't want anything else to replace my habit. More importantly this app is IRREPLACEABLE.

Hey! I've been looking through Musify's source code because I'm interested in understanding how it works internally and potentially maintaining my own fork.

I have a few technical questions, if you don't mind:

1. Since Musify relies on YouTube for search and stream extraction, what has historically been the biggest cause of playback breaking? YouTube changing its internal APIs, player scripts, signature handling, or something else?

2. When YouTube changes something and playback stops working, how did you usually identify the cause? Were there particular logs, tools, or upstream projects that helped?

3. Is the vendored youtube_explode_dart implementation heavily modified for Musify, or could its upstream version be updated independently?

4. Are there any parts of the codebase that are particularly fragile or that a new maintainer should understand before making changes?

5. Does Musify depend on any external infrastructure that isn't immediately obvious from reading the source code?

I'm not asking you to fix anything or take on additional work. I'd just appreciate any technical pointers you're comfortable sharing. Thanks!

3. hard to answer, we added various fixes to it
4. audio playback (just_audio + audio service implementation)
5. everything is in the code, no hidden puzzles

Thanks for the answers! The part about the fixes you've added to youtube_explode_dart caught my attention.

I'm trying to understand how I could maintain a fork without accidentally breaking things that already work.

Were most of those fixes made directly inside the vendored package, and is there a particular Git history, commit, or set of files you'd recommend examining to understand those modifications?

Also, regarding the audio playback implementation, are there any particularly tricky issues with just_audio and the audio service integration that aren't immediately obvious from reading the code?

I'm planning to investigate the existing implementation before attempting any changes.

For those who has already installed it, yes it should continue working until it breaks. But there will be no new updates or anything at all. (However, I'm still waiting for the answer, I replied them on email)

I think the best approach is to protect the project while addressing the DMCA complaint properly.

Carefully review the full DMCA notice to identify exactly what content is being challenged and the legal basis for the complaint. Temporarily remove or disable the specific APK downloads mentioned in the notice while investigating the claim, rather than risking the entire repository. If the complaint is invalid, consider consulting a copyright lawyer and submitting a formal counter-notice if legally justified. Keep the source code backed up and continue developing the project in a compliant way. If necessary, provide official downloads for future releases through a reliable channel, after verifying that the distribution method does not violate any applicable rights.

Moving the repository to another hosting platform could help preserve access to the source code, but it would not resolve the underlying legal issue.

Please don't give up on Musify. Many users appreciate your work, and I hope you can find a solution that protects both the project and its community. Thank you for all the time and effort you've put into it.
