mod_auth_cas is not compatible with Apache 2.4.x

According to this issue on the mod_auth_cas repo, there's not yet an official way to run mod_auth_cas on Apache 2.4.x

Is there an example available for using CAS only through Tomcat that could site side by side with the Apache->CAS->Tomcat version?

Thanks for filing. I'll check but I think remember compiling this plugin for Apache 2.4 in our cloud environment. Let me check on that and get back to you to see if it is actually possible.

We don't have a version of the plugin that works only with Tomcat unfortunately.

Hi Camilo, my apologies, I was wrong about that. Our mod_auth_cas users are all on Apache 2.2. Is there a specific problem you're having compiling the plugin? We might be able to assist.

I'm surprised. The official mod_auth_cas doesn't actually work on Apache
2.4. There's a patch, but it hasn't been accepted yet. I guess they're
using the patched version?

Sorry, that was a typo. Meant to say Apache 2.2 in that last comment.

Update: apereo/mod_auth_cas now supports Apache 2.4 and most newer OS installs do have repositories containing a mod_auth_cas package that is compiled against Apache 2.4.

For those using Amazon Linux, the OS is still a bit behind (at the time of this comment it's some sort of custom combination of CentOS 5 and 6) and there isn't an available repository with an updated package.

In any event, compiling from source is quite easy and outlined on the mod_auth_cas README under Building from Source.

Required libraries we used:

• gcc
• httpd24-devel
• libcurl-devel
• openssl-devel
• pcre-devel

Steps to compile:

• Pull down the source code from Github

• Run these commands within the CAS source directory:

  autoreconf -ivf
  ./configure && make && sudo make install
  

• Configure Apache

Yes, yum install the libraries.

For Apache 2.2 => 2.4, the httpd and httpd-tools packages should be removed prior to installing Apache 2.4. Example:

sudo yum erase httpd
sudo yum erase httpd-tools
sudo yum install httpd24.x86_64
sudo yum install mod24_ssl
