Tapping on an empty area to deselect on iPad not working (for me).

I am following the user guide for iPad. Can’t seem to deselect an object by tapping an empty area.

@PotomacSharpening thank you, I could not make it fail here, so two questions that decide where to look. Is Touch rotate switched on in the camera bar? With it on, one finger turns the view instead of selecting, so a tap on empty space does not clear the selection. And did you start Select multiple from the long press menu? In that mode the first tap on empty space only ends the mode and leaves the selection as it is; the second tap clears it.

If neither is it: which iPad and iPadOS is it, in Safari or as the installed app, and did you tap with a finger or with the Pencil? I will make the guide say the two exceptions in the table too.
