Where Network Doctor needs help

Thanks for considering a contribution. Coding is welcome, but it is not required. A careful report from a real Windows, macOS, Linux, VPN, campus, work, hotel, proxy, or IPv6 environment can close an important verification gap.

• Browse every open good first issue or help wanted task.
• Package-focused first contributions include checking Scoop on Windows and verifying and documenting .deb upgrades.
• macOS users can check LAN map names against live DNS-SD devices. Windows VPN users can verify route and tunnel evidence.

Real networks are the biggest need

The simulator already covers many controlled failures. What it cannot supply is evidence from networks people actually depend on. Current focused opportunities include:

• a real captive portal before and after sign-in
• split DNS on an authorized VPN or managed network
• an IPv6-only or IPv6-first network
• a proxy-only corporate, campus, or lab network

A correct result is useful evidence. Please comment even if you can only perform the verification and cannot implement a fix.

How to join in

1. Read CONTRIBUTING.md.
2. Comment on an issue that you would like to take or test so others know it is in progress.
3. Follow the issue's environment, commands, and definition of done.
4. Post a concise result. Include the Network Doctor version, OS and architecture, broad network type, expected reality, and what Network Doctor reported.
5. If testing reveals a distinct reproducible defect, open a focused bug rather than expanding the verification issue.

You can also use the real network field report form when your environment does not match an existing task.

Protect private network information

netdoc --support report.ndoc <target> creates a sanitized local snapshot, but it is not uploaded and it is not a guarantee. Review it before sharing. Remove internal hostnames and domains, addresses, usernames, interface and VPN names, Wi-Fi names, proxy URLs, organization details, credentials, tokens, and anything else that should not be public.

If you have access to an environment listed above, even one careful verification pass is a meaningful contribution.
