Is it possible to use controller button combinations as keyboard output?

First of all, thank you for creating such a good program.
It is nothing other than...
For example, when using an Xbox controller, I want to make it recognize the keyboard input ALT+1 when LB+A is pressed, but no matter how much I search, I can't figure out how to do it.

@mini6969-alt, thank you for the kind words, and yes, this is exactly what PadForge's macros are for. The feature you want is built in. Setup takes about a minute once you know where everything is.

Here is the complete walkthrough.

Step 1: Open the slot's Macros tab

1. In PadForge's sidebar (left side of the window), click on the slot that's set up for your Xbox controller. (If you don't have one yet, click Add Controller in the sidebar, pick Xbox, then go to the Devices page and click your physical Xbox controller's slot badge to assign it to the new slot. See the Quick Start guide if you need a hand getting that far.)
2. At the top of the slot's page, you'll see tabs: Controller, Mappings, Sticks, Triggers, Force Feedback, Macros, and more. Click Macros.

You should now see the Macros tab. If there are no macros yet, the list will be empty.

Step 2: Add a new macro

1. Click the Add button.
2. Give it a name. Something like LB+A → Alt+1 is fine. Any name works.

Step 3: Set the trigger to "LB + A"

The "trigger" is the input combination that fires the macro. You want it to fire when LB and A are both pressed at the same time.

1. In the macro's trigger section, leave the Trigger Source set to Output Controller (the default). This means PadForge will watch the virtual Xbox controller's output, which is what you want for LB and A.
2. Click Record Trigger.
3. On your physical Xbox controller, press and hold LB first, then while still holding LB, press and hold A.
4. While both buttons are held, the live display in PadForge should show both LB and A as pressed.
5. Click Stop.

Your trigger is now "LB + A". Both buttons must be pressed simultaneously for the macro to fire. More detail in the wiki: Macros: Recording a Trigger.

Step 4: Set the fire mode

The fire mode controls when the macro fires.

• On Press fires once each time you press the combination.
• While Held fires every frame while you hold it.
• On Release fires once when you let go.

For sending Alt+1 once per press, choose On Press.

Step 5: Add the "Key Press" action for Alt+1

The "action" is what the macro actually does when it fires. You want it to send Alt+1 to the keyboard.

1. In the macro's Actions section, click Add Action.
2. From the action-type dropdown, pick Key Press.
3. In the key dropdown that appears, pick the key combo Alt+1. PadForge supports key combinations directly: keys press in order (Alt first, then 1), then release in reverse order (1 first, then Alt). You can also type the combo string Alt+1 into the field directly.
4. Leave the duration at 50 ms (the default). That's how long the key stays pressed before auto-releasing. Most games are happy with 50 ms.

Step 6 (optional but recommended): Enable "Consume Trigger Buttons"

By default, when you press LB + A on your Xbox controller, the game also sees LB and A go through to the virtual Xbox controller. So if your game treats LB or A as gameplay buttons, those will fire alongside the keyboard Alt+1 output.

If you want the LB + A combo to be replaced by Alt+1 (so the game does not also see LB and A pressed), enable the Consume Trigger Buttons option on the macro itself.

Step 7: Test it

1. Make sure the macro's enable checkbox is on. Each macro has one. If it's off, the macro stays in settings but never fires.
2. Open any application that accepts keyboard input. Notepad works for typing tests. For Alt+1 specifically, use a key tester like keyboardtester.com since Alt+1 does not print a visible character.
3. On your physical Xbox controller, press LB + A.
4. The key tester should show Alt and 1 both pressed, then released, in the right order.
