It would be really great if the image layer could also support animated GIFs. Alternatively, having a separate layer for GIFs would also be nice.

Why

If GIF layers are available, you can produce a truly rich output!

It seems possible to decode the GIF frame by frame and apply it as an overlay list.

Yes, you could do it that way, but I think it would be better if the editor handled it internally. It would also make it possible to overlay completely different videos, so I will reopen that feature request.
