FAQ

Will Felucca support Bluetooth (BLE) MIDI?

No, and it will not in the future either. The FM-1's Bluetooth runs only on the chip vendor's closed-source libraries, which cannot be shipped in GPL-3.0 firmware, and there is no open Bluetooth stack for this chip. The stack would also need more RAM than Felucca has left, and its radio interrupts would cause audio dropouts.

To play Felucca without a computer, use:

  • USB MIDI: Felucca is a class-compliant USB MIDI device, so a phone or tablet can play it over a USB cable.
  • TRS MIDI IN: a keyboard's MIDI out through a TRS adapter, or a Bluetooth-MIDI-to-TRS adapter if you want wireless.

Will Felucca run on other devices?

The FM-1 is the reference: every release is built for it and tested on it. Beside it:

  • In the browser: Try it, no FM-1 needed.
  • On a desktop with SDL2 (beta, source only): platforms/linux. It has run on macOS so far; Linux is next. No binary is shipped.
  • On the M5Stack CoreS3 (in progress): the screen, the speaker, touch volume and PLAY, and USB audio already work on the device. It is not published yet.
  • On the M-VAVE SMK-37 (proposed): a board for it is proposed in felucca-bsp#13. I don't have one yet, so nothing is tested.

Linux-based instruments. The desktop build is plain SDL2, so anyone is free to port Felucca to a device that runs Linux. Making it fit that device's keys, pads, knobs and screen, and making it pleasant to play there, is a different matter. I won't tailor Felucca to each one, and they are not listed as supported. If you try one, tell us how it went.

What fits best is the FM-1's shape: a keyboard, a small screen and a few knobs. A device without knobs can run Felucca, but most of it is played with knobs.

Handheld game consoles that run libretro might work one day. Nothing has been tried yet, and I have none to test on.
