client window sizes not respected for first instance of floating window per workspace

ever since updating to 0.52.0, i've been having issues with new floating windows opening with the wrong size. the first instance of a floating window in each workspace has the dimensions totally out of wack.

i'm using kitty as an example, because i have it configured in its own config to have a specific height and width

expected behavior

• open new floating window -> it opens at the size requested by the client

actual behavior

• empty workspace
  • open new floating window -> it opens with height and width set to 100% of monitor height and width
• workspace with only tiled windows
  • open new floating window -> it opens with height set to ~98% of monitor height (71/72 for precise ratio if it matters)
• workspace with at least 1 floating window
  • open new floating window -> it opens with dimensions consistent with what it's requesting as expected
• empty workspace after moving mouse focus from workspace on other monitor
  • same behavior as workspace with only tiled windows

attempted steps to resolve

• removing all windowrules: no change in behavior
• adding a windowrule specifically to set size for floating kitty windows (match:class ^(kitty)$, match:float yes, size 1151 630): size is still ignored for first floating window

#12375 case 2 looks similar, but window sizes appear random rather than consistent like here

Add an explicit size rule to force Hyprland to respect your desired dimensions: windowrule = size 1151 630, class:^(kitty)$,floating:1. This overrides the buggy fallback logic where the first floating window's desiredGeometry is treated as invalid during initial commit, triggering monitor-based sizing. Related issues #12398 and #12375 are tracking this regression.

1. rule as stated isn't valid. fixing it to be windowrule = match:class ^(kitty)$, size 1151 630, float on does keep it the right size, but that's for all windows. setting it to be match:class ^(kitty)$, match:float yes, size 1151 630 has the same issue, where the size of the first floating window is still not as defined either by that rule or by kitty's own config

2. why is the desiredGeometry treated as invalid? the responses to mentioned issues seems to treat this as intended behavior instead of a regression

This is a v0.52.0 regression where the first floating window's desiredGeometry is incorrectly detected as invalid, triggering monitor-based fallback sizing. Workaround: Add explicit window rule: windowrule = size 1151 630, class:^(kitty)$,floating:1 (or use percentages like size 60% 70%). Related issues: #12398, #12375.

as i responded with your previous comment, that windowrule both isn't valid as written, and when fixed to use the correct syntax, doesn't work for the first floating window

why is kitty floating? Windowrule?

Have you checked git?

Kitty is floating because it was launched with hyprctl dispatch exec [float] app2unit kitty.desktop

And what do you mean have I checked git? If you mean the -git package, I'm not on arch, but I did use the nixos flake built on the latest commit (as of opening)
