A proper HDR configuration, actual is wrong

so hyprland defaults to:

• sdr_max_luminance 80
• sdr_min_luminance 0.2

it's completly wrong, but anyway...

For proper HDR config you would need:

• [SDR/HDR] MAX luminance: monitor reported max value
• [SDR/HDR] MIN luminance: 0 or monitor reported min value
• sdr brighness : 0.50 (ideal starting point, user can adjust later on)
• sdr saturation : 1.00

proper values can be found with

sudo pacman -S ddcutil
drm_info | grep luminance
│   │       │   ├───Max display mastering luminance: 603 cd/m²
│   │       │   ├───Min display mastering luminance: 0.0300 cd/m²
│   │       │   ├───Max display mastering luminance: 295 cd/m²
│   │       │   ├───Min display mastering luminance: 0.2980 cd/m²

So if my max luminance is 408 cd/m^2 and my min luminance is 0.2339 cd/m^2, are you saying set the sdr_max_luminance to 408 and the sdr_min_luminance to 0.2339?

When I set sdr_max_luminance to 10000 and sdr_min_luminance to 0, with sdr_brightness to 0.04, it's somewhat doable, but i feel like it's still so bright. My max brightness is obviously very high compared to the numbers in this thread, so should I be setting it lower?

not sure that 10000 luminance is legit..

for lg C4:

800 nits of maximum brightness for the 42- and 48-inch models, and 1,200 nits for the 55-inch and larger models

String-config (monitor=) users can't set these at all. On 0.55.2 the classic monitor= parser rejects the luminance tokens:

invalid syntax at "sdr_max_luminance"

sdrbrightness/sdrsaturation are accepted on the same line; only sdr_max_luminance/sdr_min_luminance error. They only seem to work via the Lua hl.monitor() config shown above.

The practical fallout: anyone whose monitors.conf is generated by nwg-displays is pinned at the sdr_max_luminance 80 default and can't raise it, so SDR-in-HDR stays very dim and sdrbrightness alone can't compensate. The same string HDR config (sdrbrightness 1.25) looked correct on 0.54.3.

Setup: Hyprland 0.55.2, AMD RX 9070 XT (RADV), Samsung Odyssey G91SD QD-OLED.

Is wiring the luminance tokens into the monitor= string parser on the table, or is Lua config now the intended path for them?
