Adding an iMessages app extension would allow users to attach photos from immich to SMS and iMessages directly from within the Messages app, similar to what can be done with the stock Photos app.

I'd be interested in sponsoring this feature.

I would love to see this become a thing.

Google Photos has exactly this and it's such a convenient feature, I basically never have to go thru the process of sharing from the app itself.

Currently in the process of building a nas for immich among other services, excited to finally become self-hosted!

The OS really does matter as they require separate tooling for system features unless it happens to be unified by a library. it's much better to have separate listings and let the devs make that call

The requested functionality is by no means made the same. With the current documentation, This uses a custom interface while the discussion you provided is using the system's file interface

If it were an extension for the iOS Files App it would be functionally the same
