[Feature] Album-specific crops

The feature

Immich is wonderful and I would like to use it to gather our family's images into one place. It is already pretty good at this. Additionally, we (and our extended family) have multiple physical display devices we would like to publish our "Best Of" images to. It is easy to set up automation where images are pulled from a shared album and pushed to those displays.... but those displays are of different models and have different aspect ratios that are often not the same as what the picture was taken in. Some devices might use 16:9, others 4:3, etc.

Today, crops seem to live with the asset itself, so that asset will have the same crop in all albums it is part of. It would be nice to have one album for each display device type, each with its own manually-positioned crop in the relevant aspect ratio. Presumably this per-album crop would override the asset-level crop. Then I could just make some simple automation using the API to keep any given device type in sync with its album.

I'm happy to make this feature myself as a pull request, if there aren't any objections to its existence. While this seems to be primarily a server thing, I say it is also web and mobile because presumably one might want to specify, when editing an asset, if you are editing the asset itself or the album-level override for it.

(I've tried to find any mention of such a feature request in the past and couldn't find anything, but let's be honest, there have been a lot of feature requests. Sorry if I missed things.)

i think this sounds like a nice idea that would benefit nieche use cases, but i assume probably lots of different ones. i could think of a use case where one could use that feature basically as bulk crop. if i want to send someone 100 images and they need them all in a specific aspect ratio that could be set for that album once and everything added would be downloaded in that crop.

for now i think i would handle your situation with creating a seperate user and just uploading the specificly cropped images there in all the versions you need to not spam your families main timelines... but it's definetly extra work. but maybe it helps

To me, this sounds far too niche to include in Immich directly. It might be a good fit for some of the existing photo frame/slideshow integrations though.

I hear what you are saying, @bo0tzz, but in counter-argument, those integrations do not let my users pick a crop per picture for their own pictures, as I would like to do here. Yes, I could download the pictures and manually crop things myself, but I would rather my family members do that for me as they take creative control over their own images.

And while this is already beyond what I specified, you could see how other per-album settings might easily fit into this pattern - imagine you want to share pictures of your kids (or your home) but want to mask out any GPS data. In general, if you view this feature request as "I want to make a collaborative presentation view of a subset of our assets" I think it could be quite powerful.

I don't know what the "Workflow" thing on the roadmap means (or even how to find out) but I wonder if this might not fit well with that.
