I have searched the existing feature requests, both open and closed, to make sure this is not a duplicate request.
The feature
On mobile, changing the profile picture opens the device's image picker, so any local image can be used. On web, clicking the pencil on your own avatar (user settings → profile) only opens the "Select avatar color" dialog. The only way to set a picture is to open a photo that is already in the library and choose "Set as profile picture" from the asset viewer menu, which isn't discoverable from the profile at all.
This is inconsistent between platforms and different from what users expect. Almost every other web app lets you click your avatar and pick a file. Users who want a picture that isn't in their library (a logo, an avatar, a cropped picture of themselves) first have to upload it as a regular asset, which then sits in their timeline, before they can use it.
Proposal: extend the dialog that opens from the pencil on the avatar with two actions next to the color choices:
ProfileImageCropperModal) on the selected file. The existing "Set as profile picture" action in the asset viewer stays as it is.
The server side already supports this:
POST /users/profile-imageaccepts a file upload, and the mobile app uses it the same way. The web change would mainly add these entry points in front of the existing crop and upload flow.Note: #3025 asked for something similar and was closed by pointing to "Set as profile picture". This request is specifically about choosing a file that is not in the library to match the mobile app, and about making both options reachable from the avatar edit dialog.
