🛠️ Installation Guide

Prerequisites

Before installing HackMate, ensure you have the following installed on your system:

  • PHP >= 7.4 (PHP 8.0+ recommended)
  • MySQL >= 5.7 or MariaDB >= 10.2
  • Apache/Nginx web server
  • Composer (PHP dependency manager)
  • XAMPP/WAMP/MAMP (optional, for local development)

Installation Steps

1. Clone the Repository

git clone https://github.com/improperboy/Hackmate.git
cd Hackmate

2. Install Dependencies

composer install

This will install required packages including:

  • DomPDF (for certificate generation)
  • PHP libraries for PDF and SVG handling

3. Database Setup

Option A: Using phpMyAdmin (Recommended for Beginners)

  1. Open phpMyAdmin (http://localhost/phpmyadmin)
  2. Create a new database named hackmate
  3. Import the database schema:
    • Click on the hackmate database
    • Go to "Import" tab
    • Choose file from sql/ directory
    • Click "Go"

Option B: Using MySQL Command Line

4. Database Configuration

Create and configure the database connection file:

  1. Navigate to includes/ directory
  2. Create db.php (if not exists)
  3. Add the following configuration:

5. Configure File Permissions

Ensure the following directories have write permissions:

For Linux/Mac:

For Windows (XAMPP):

  • Right-click on folders → Properties → Security
  • Ensure "Users" has "Write" permissions

6. Environment Configuration

7. Web Server Configuration

For XAMPP:

  1. Copy the project folder to C:\xampp\htdocs\Hackmate
  2. Start Apache and MySQL from XAMPP Control Panel
  3. Access the application at http://localhost/Hackmate

For Production (Apache):

Edit your .htaccess file (already included) or virtual host configuration:

8. Initial Setup

  1. Access the application: http://localhost/Hackmate
  2. Complete the installation wizard (if available)
  3. Or manually create an admin account in the database:

9. Configure AI Features (Optional)

Google Gemini AI Setup:

  1. Get an API key from Google AI Studio
  2. Run the chatbot setup: http://localhost/Hackmate/setup_chatbot.php
  3. Enter your API key when prompted

10. Test Your Installation

  1. Login with admin credentials
  2. Navigate to Admin Dashboard
  3. Create test users with different roles

🌐 Deployment to Production

Using cPanel

  1. Upload files via File Manager or FTP

Step 1: Clone the Repository

Step 2: Install Dependencies

composer install

This will install:

  • dompdf/dompdf - PDF generation library

Step 3: Database Setup

  1. Create a MySQL database:

  1. Import the database schema:
