WinPE booting in low res

I posted this question over at iPXE which led me to here.

"I have a WinPE image that i boot to using iPXE. When I boot the environment off of disk it loads to my pc at the correct native monitor resolution(4k or 1080p depending on monitor. When i boot the same image over iPXE it loads at very low resolution (800x600). How can i get iPXE to boot the same way as disk?"

Presumably you're using iPXE to load wimboot, which then loads WinPE.

I am using iPXE to load wimboot then WinPE. My winPE environment is built using Win11 24H2

Try using the "gui" option on the wimboot command line.

I have tried the suggestion but it did not work.

I tried the same fixes that were put forth in this discussion #58 (comment) but no success. Any help would be appreciated and let me know if you have questions or need other info.

First are you using EFI, or pcbios?

Exactly what does iPXE do? What is the script? Have you tried a script which does the absolute minimal only?

To ease debugging of errors during wimboot, the tables containing valid graphic modes are essentially disabled. By using gui, these tables are not disabled, but if they, for some reason was changed by something else, there is nothing wimboot can do about it.

Some firmware does change graphics mode when using PXE, others does not. So what happens on this device when iPXE starts, is the original resolution changed, or is it kept?

When iPXE starts the resolution is already low.

In discussions it's best to reply to the thread.

If it's already low, then this is probably a "feature" of your firmware when network boot is selected. Essentially it does the same as wimboot without GUI.

You could try and use iPXEs console command to change this, see ipxe.org for the details on how that command works and what is needed to use it. (You will need to recompile iPXE)
