Homepage redesign: merge John's visual approach with Hana's wireframe structure

Context

Hana created wireframes (Figma v1.0) proposing a new homepage structure. John already created index_alt.qmd with sample thumbnails and a globe hero image.

Wireframe spec

• Logo + left sidebar nav
• Hero area: Showcase Items Gallery (sample thumbnails with links) + Interactive Map (progressive globe embed or animated GIF per issue rotating globe on home page #55)
• Three collapsible accordion sections: "What is iSamples?", "How can I access it?", "Why browser-based?"

Work needed

• Merge John's index_alt.qmd visual elements (sample images, globe, Moorea video) with Hana's accordion layout
• Add impact stats ("6.7M samples, 4 repositories, 90+ countries")
• Consider Quarto callout/accordion for collapsible sections
• Replace current index.qmd when ready
