It would be neat if you could add your place to stay on one or more nights and calculate the costs per day. Also show when you need to arrive or depart (check in/check out time e.g.) in your day plans if needed.

Just to challenge the idea a bit.
Is it that the current plan doesn't work for you, or do you want to improve it?

For example, you can create a multi-day plan at 23:59 with the correct price per night, and add details like "Check-in 15H - Check-out 10H" in the comments?

I think it's messy that way. It's not really a place you want to go to, but it's a place to stay. So ideally we need to add accommodation with a check-in date and time, a check-out date and time, and the total price for the whole stay. You should only see your check-in and check-out dates in your plans, so you can plan your sightseeing around them.

A few different points are being mixed into one message:

To me, there are two separate uses for accommodations in the plan:

• Add the accommodation for trip planning (check-in/check-out like real bookings)
• Add it as the first/last step of a day (e.g., at 00:01 / 23:59) so the day path highlights start/end at the accommodation

These aren't mutually exclusive. You can set check-in to 15:00 and still add an "end of day" stop at 23:59 (or whatever time matches your plan) to make the hotel show as the last step. The 23:59 thing is just a convenience trick, you can use it or ignore it.

I don't see enough use cases yet to justify adding a dedicated isAccommodation flag to the TripItem model (as a checkbox in the item creation modal). I'm trying to keep TRIP as minimalist as possible, covering the most cases with the least specificity, and in the trips I've planned so far I've never had any trouble spotting my hotel when quickly skimming the plans?

What prevents you from doing exactly that, for example, check-in at 15:00 and check-out at 10:00 the next day?

To be honest, I think having the hotel in a separate location (maybe in the bar where the date is or a separate bar that could have no time if you're not checking in/out) makes sense. A hotel feels separate from the "activities". I get that you can kind of get around this by just adding the hotel on your check-in/out dates, but it feels cleaner to have it separated.

Great work so far though! Using it now and enjoying it.

And if the hotel was somewhere else (let's say in a dedicated section, the where could be defined later), what would be the added value? What would we do with this information (isAccommodation being an extra property so an extra information).

It first I found it quite annoying to do this workaround, but that was when I was trying to fit my trip from last year in trip to see if it could work for me.

For this years trip I started differently and for the hotels I did the work around as above:

• (create a new category called accommodations, assign it a bright color)
• for each hotel
  • add hotel as a place
  • create a plan item set place to hotel, set time to 00:00, select ALL days I am staying at the hotel
  • create a plan item set place to hotel, set time to 23:59, select ALL days I am staying at the hotel

It's still a tiny but of work but it's only 2 plan items per hotel, I was initially unaware I could pick multiple days in the plan item window.

In legacy UI I can easily spot the accommodations because bright category color (On BETA UI you have to choose between plan text or place so I do miss out on that there sadly).

I then usually move on to adding stations and planning the major moves between accommodations and travel to from the destination country.

Then when I start planning the days in detail (I might a slightly overdue it with the granularity now 😓) I go and update the plan text and times to 'Hotel Check-in', 'Leave Hotel', 'Return to Hotel', 'Hotel Check-out' this does indeed give most (all) of my days a nice start and return point to the hotel.

Personally I got used to the more detailed approach which avoids some of the generic 'plan items' like for accomodations and such. However I do still see some value like you mentioned here. A 'dedicated' section for plan items that do not have a time set. Just group them (alphabetically, user can add a number prefix if they like) on top with a small spacer between.

e.g.

Day 3
---
- accommodation (first hotel)
- emergency info (no place set) -- contains comment field with the emergency contact info, insurance info, info local disaster response, ...
- food allergies (no place set) -- comment contains a 'localized text listing food allergies'
---
- 9:00 some activity (place 1)
- 11:00 some other activity (place 2)
- 12:00 lunch (place 3)
- 14:00 walking tour (no place)
- 18:00 bar (place 4)

Might not exactly fulfill the original request but it would be more generic and allow for pinning the accommodation. There is some flexibility here for example the plan text can be "accommodation" and the place the hotel, or just add the place and keep the plan text the same name, ...

But it won't be a very specific thing, it would be more generic and useful for other things. Especially combined with the (I think somewhat overlooked) category feature of the place items.

Truth be told, I kind of stuff some of this information in the Day level note field at the moment which mostly alleviated the need for a more generic non time bound place/plan item for a day. Combined with the more detailed checkin/checkout/leave/return suggestion from above for my actual hotels.
