Saving user login on failure

I ran into a bit of a usability bug I can't figure out. 

If the login fails, I want to be able to populate the username/password fields with the failed login information. I couldn't find a way to do that without editing going into passport (and `flash`ing the user info). Any good way to do it -- if not, could that be a feature request?
