Radio Automation

Radio Automation is a purpose built audio player designed to be an off-hours music player for my animated light display during the holidays. It plays a playlist, and a schedule of events (cron or MQTT triggered) can start, stop, or interrupt playback and announce the time and temperature.

Documentation

Page What it covers
Getting Started Install, first-run setup, the main window
Playlists Adding tracks, importing M3U / Zara playlists, internet streams, shuffle
Scheduler and Events Creating events, cron syntax, Immediate vs Delayed
MQTT Triggering events from MQTT, publishing the current song
Time and Temperature Files Zara-style audio file layout and naming
Preferences Every setting in the Preferences window
Weather Weather Underground setup
Troubleshooting Common problems and known limitations

Feature summary

  • Player - plays most media types supported by Windows through WASAPI exclusive mode, with a level meter, volume control and remaining/end time.
  • Playlists - build from files, folders, M3U playlists, Zara playlists or an internet stream. Optional shuffle each time the playlist wraps.
  • Scheduler - cron-style events for Play, Stop, Time and Temperature announcements, each either Immediate (interrupts) or Delayed (plays between tracks).
  • MQTT - the same events can be triggered by MQTT messages, and the current song can be published to an MQTT topic or a text file.
  • Weather - current temperature and humidity from Weather Underground, shown in the UI and used for temperature announcements.
