Too aggressive inline word-level diffs in unified view?

I switched to unified view and saw this, I find it hard to read. Has it always done this? I think I remember seeing a commit that would have made these inline word-diffs more likely. I don't want to just revert that without discussion.

I don't remember ever seeing something that looks like that.
What change do you think may have led to that?

I mean the snapshot you show is indeed difficult to read. That's clearly something that could (and should) be enhanced.
The only change I remember doing for finer-grain highlights is splitting worlds on underscores (which is debatable by itself). I don't think it has an impact on that, but if it has, I have no problem reverting it.
