Welcome to the OpenTech Directory! This isn't just another list of apps; it’s a living, breathing project dedicated to the "de-big tech" movement. In a world where our digital lives are often locked behind walled gardens, this directory serves as a map to freedom.
While other directories might be driven by affiliate links or corporate sponsorships, OpenTech is built on a different set of values:
This project isn't managed by a faceless algorithm. It is maintained by you. Every recommendation that comes in is vetted and researched. If the community finds a great tool, it gets added. If a tool goes south or changes its privacy policy for the worse, we discuss it and update accordingly.
"Open" isn't just a buzzword here. Every app or service submitted undergoes a research phase before being added. We look at:
- Privacy: Does it respect the user?
- Open Source: Is the code auditable?
- Utility: Does it actually work well enough to replace Big Tech?
We believe the web has become too bloated. You won't find heavy tracking scripts, autoplay videos, or 50MB of unnecessary JavaScript here. The design is kept intentionally simple so it loads instantly on any device and stays accessible to everyone.
The "de-big tech" journey is a marathon. New tools emerge every day, and old ones evolve. This directory is a work in progress by design. It will never be "finished" because the mission to reclaim our digital privacy is ongoing.
- Vetted Alternatives: Hand-picked replacements for Google, Apple, Meta, and Microsoft.
- No-Nonsense Categorization: Find exactly what you need (Browsers, Email, Cloud, etc.) without the clutter.
- Transparent Sourcing: Everything is backed by community suggestions and manual verification.
- Lightweight & Fast: Optimized for speed and low data usage.
Found an app that changed your life? Or maybe you noticed a bug in our current list?
I’m always looking for new tools to research. Since this is a community project, your input is the fuel that keeps this going. Feel free to share your recommendations or report any issues!
I'm currently working on securing a dedicated domain name for the project to make it easier for everyone to find. Until then, the focus remains on the quality of the content and the simplicity of the experience.
Stay free, stay private.
If this setup helped you revive an old machine or learn Arch Linux, consider supporting the project.
Even a ⭐ on the repository helps a lot.
