Clock compass facing?

I've always wondered if it's the the front of the clock or where the rear of the clock is facing to enter the compass heading. So if my clock face is facing east, that's the compass heading I enter?

Usually best way is to record the compass direction with a phone as if you're taking a picture of the clock head on. So front of the clock not the rear!
