Looks great! Just minor comments. Since this is a lot of code, let's do a flake8 check before merging.

Adding a first pyface application. Calling the stage 4.1, so going from 4.0 to 4.1 can be a series of exercises IMO. It has a file browser, and when you double click on an image file, it opens it in the central pane (
SplitEditorAreaPane):
