Custom shifted keys

What is the best way to achieve custom shifted keys? I use the engram layout which contains non-standard shifted keys.

This is very achievable with QMK but I was trying to reach some level of feature parity in my kanata config which I still use in certain situations.

I was attempting to wrangle defoverrides into doing this. I had some success but also it's rather scuffed. Here is an example. It "works" by introducing intermediary keys that aren't actually used (like \) and mapping their shifted values in the map. But for one thing it's confusing as hell to read and write, and also these overrides affect all layers. So in order to move forward with it I would have to mess with loading in config parts dynamically, which is something I have yet to play with.

Needless to say it feels like abusing defoverrides (and my brain), and I'm really hoping there's a better way I am overlooking.

Maybe use a shifted layer with unshift.
