Description
Would be extremely useful to support "Open with..." menu of various DE (desktop environments).
AFAIK, on Linux / XDG desktops a special .desktop file should be registered (copied to a special system directory like /usr/share/applications) for each supported file type.
.a and .so extensions would be a good start.
