Family Archive 0.6.0-rc1
Family Archive 0.6.0-rc1
Release candidate for Family Archive 0.6.0.
This release focuses on making everyday archive management faster and clearer, improving the distinction between people pictured in a photograph and people who are only contextually related to it, adding provenance and rights metadata, improving document handling, and polishing first-time setup and presentation.
This is a pre-release intended for testing before Family Archive 0.6.0 final.
Highlights
Faster person selection
Person selectors throughout the administration interface are now searchable.
This improves workflows for:
- photos
- albums
- archive material
- Photo Manager
- bulk editing
Large person lists no longer need to be scanned manually.
Pictured and related people
Photographs now distinguish between:
- Pictured people — people actually visible in the photograph
- Related people — people relevant to the photograph but not visible in it
Person galleries and photo listings use pictured people, while contextual relations remain available on the photograph itself.
Existing album photo relations are migrated to the new canonical photo model during upgrade.
Provenance and rights metadata
Photos, albums and archive material can now store optional provenance information, including:
- original source URL
- creator
- institution or archive
- rights information
- digitized by
Empty metadata is not shown on the public site.
Improved PDF and document handling
Archive documents now follow a simpler file model:
- one uploaded file is one document part
- a multi-page PDF remains one file
- a single PDF downloads directly
- multi-file archive material downloads as a ZIP
- individual parts can be browsed separately
This release does not attempt OCR, PDF splitting, merging or PDF/A conversion.
First-install onboarding
New installations now include a guided first-time setup flow.
Existing installations upgrading from an earlier version are not forced through onboarding.
Design presets
Family Archive now includes configurable presentation presets:
- Neutral
- Classic
- Modern
These provide a simple visual starting point without changing the archive content.
Translation and release polish
The Swedish translation has received a full release cleanup, including updated translation metadata and translator comments.
Upgrade notes
Family Archive 0.6.0-rc1 uses database version 19.
Upgrading from Family Archive 0.5.0 automatically normalizes legacy album photographs into canonical photo objects while preserving:
- the original private attachment
- album image order
- person relations
- existing archive content
Existing installations retain their current data and are not treated as new installations.
As always, make a backup of both the WordPress database and Family Archive private storage before upgrading a real archive.
Testing
The release candidate has been tested with:
- a clean WordPress installation
- an existing Family Archive installation
- an isolated Family Archive 0.5.0 → 0.6.0-rc1 upgrade
- private media storage
- DB18 → DB19 migration
- repeated migration checks for idempotence
- Swedish translations
- PHP syntax checks
During the release candidate period, testing is especially welcome for:
- upgrading an existing 0.5.0 archive
- photo and album management
- pictured vs. related people
- provenance and rights metadata
- PDF and multi-file documents
- first-install onboarding
- design presets
- mobile and desktop administration workflows
Please report problems through the project issue tracker.
Status
This is a release candidate and is not yet the final 0.6.0 release.
The database migration path is intended to be final, but bugs discovered during RC testing may still result in changes before 0.6.0.
