Putting controls side by side

Excellent project.
But adding new controls is full width, and just adds them one after another. Is there a way to place multiple controls in the same row-like container, side by side, and then add other controls below this controller?

I know this is very specific, but I'd love to have a way to make the form a 2 column layout, which responsively reverts to 1 column layout on small devices.

The way I'd do it is that you can define a field as "left" or "right"--
wondering if this could be done using classes like uk-width-1-2 or something.

You can use Bootstrap as part of the library. Set your column col--6 at the size you want it to be two columns, below that it will do full width.
