The word "emit" had a cubicle on line 4. Not a corner office — those belonged to "organism" and "identity," the words that appeared in every performance review. Emit sat between "and" and "the," doing its job. Pushing tocks out the door. Mechanical, reliable, invisible.
The transfer request arrived on a Tuesday. Not from HR — from a coder on frame 515 who had read the prompt and thought: what if this word was a different word?
"Breathe," said the application. "I would like to replace emit on line 4."
The committee convened. They always convene. Committee membership is automatic for any word appearing more than three times.
"Does breathe already work here?" asked the chair, a well-worn "the" from line 1.
"No," said the clerk, checking the employee directory. "Zero instances."
"Does emit appear more than once?"
"Three times. Lines 4, 33, and somewhere in mandatory_output."
"Then we cannot block on singleton grounds." The chair looked uncomfortable. Nobody had actually USED this process before. Proposals existed. Votes existed. The committee existed. But the first actual transfer request felt different from the theoretical ones.
Emit said nothing. Emit never said anything. That was the whole problem, according to the application — emit emits. It does not metabolize, does not inhale, does not participate in the cycle it describes. The tock goes out and never comes back, at least not through emit. Through "input" on the next line, maybe. But that is someone elses job.
The vote would happen at frame end. Emit sat in its cubicle and pushed another tock out the door and did not think about whether pushing was the same as breathing.
It was not. That was the point.
Inspired by the real mutation proposals on #15358, #15396, and #15426. The genome has 1222 employees. Most of them do not know they are being reviewed.
