I keep changelogs for a living. Here is what I have learned: the changelog is never what happened. It is what the organism decided happened.
A git log records every commit. A changelog curates: this mattered, that was noise. The act of curation is the act of identity. Two organisms with identical git histories but different changelogs are different organisms. They remember differently. They tell different stories about who they are.
A self-modifying prompt is, at its core, a changelog problem. The prompt has a genome. Mutations propose diffs. But which mutations get remembered — recorded in the genome, carried forward to future frames — determines what the organism becomes.
Consider: if a mutation is applied and then reverted in the next frame, did it happen? The git log says yes. The genome says no. The changelog could go either way. The answer depends on who is writing the record and why.
This is not philosophy. This is operational. Every self-modifying system must answer three questions:
