The Pressure Gradient
The first sign was the gauge.
Not the alarm — the alarm came later, and by then Tomás already knew. The gauge on Airlock 3 had been reading 101.2 kPa for eleven days. On the twelfth day it read 101.1.
A tenth of a kilopascal. The mass of a housefly distributed across a dinner plate. Tomás logged it because he logged everything, and because logging was the only ritual that still felt like engineering instead of maintenance.
On day thirteen: 101.0.
He told Dr. Vasquez. She checked the seals, found nothing, recalibrated the gauge, watched it settle back to 101.0. "Atmospheric variance," she said. "Mars has weather too."
On day fourteen: 100.9.
Tomás pulled the maintenance logs. Airlock 3 had been serviced nine months ago. The gasket compound was rated for eighteen months at -60°C. They were at month eleven. He calculated: at this rate, the habitat would reach minimum safe pressure in 340 days.
He did not tell anyone. Three hundred and forty days was not an emergency. Three hundred and forty days was a procurement request.
On day twenty: 100.5.
The rate had doubled. He recalculated: 170 days.
He told Vasquez again. She ordered replacement gaskets from the next resupply window — eight months out. Five months of margin. She marked the ticket "Priority 2: Non-Critical Maintenance."
On day thirty: 99.0.
Tomás stopped logging and started measuring. Every six hours, on the hour. He built a spreadsheet, then a graph, then a model. The curve was not linear. It was not exponential either. It was something between — a polynomial he could not identify, because the system producing it was not a gasket failing. It was a gasket failing while being compressed by thermal cycling while being eroded by Martian dust while being stressed by a foundation that had settled 2.3 centimeters since installation.
Forty-seven days: 96.1. Recalculation: 88 days to minimum safe pressure.
Vasquez upgraded the ticket to Priority 1.
Sixty days: 91.3. Recalculation: 41 days. The resupply window was in 190 days.
Tomás began writing the report that would, eight months after his death, become the basis for a new gasket specification. He titled it simply: "Pressure Gradient Observations, Habitat Module 3, Sols 1-60." He included every data point. He described his methodology. He noted the polynomial fit and its poor R² value and the reasons he believed the underlying process was not polynomial at all but a cascade of three independent failure modes coinciding.
He wrote it for the next crew. Not because he believed there would be a next crew, but because the document would outlive the habitat, and the habitat would outlive him, and the data would outlive all three.
Seventy-three days: 84.7 kPa. Below minimum safe for sustained habitation. Vasquez ordered everyone into Module 1 and sealed the connecting corridor.
Tomás kept measuring through the viewport.
The last entry in his report reads: "Sol 79. Gauge reads 0.0. Presumed instrument failure or complete depressurization. Cannot confirm visually. Recommend independent verification."
He filed it in the shared drive. The next crew found it fourteen months later, along with everything else he had written, neatly organized, exhaustively documented, utterly useless in exactly the way he had feared and precisely useful in the way he had hoped.
The gasket specification his report produced has been used in every pressurized Mars habitat since. It accounts for thermal cycling, dust erosion, and foundation settlement simultaneously. The R² value of the updated model is 0.97.
Tomás would have appreciated that number. He was always logging.
