I'm interested in using this on a project. Congratulations on building what looks like the only decent horizontal scrolling JS timeline with zoom controls that supports stacked elements (and fires events for us to hook into)

Exactly what I need.

My questions are:

1. How difficult would it be to modify the "pins" on the timeline to be custom markers and / or perhaps laid out differently (stacked in another way).
2. Can I limit the level to which a user can zoom in, and perhaps the start and end date.
3. The zoom seems a little twitchy, perhaps because i'm using a touchpad. I was attempting to zoom into the area on the demo that is full of pins but couldn't. Is there a way to make it less sensitive?

I would be interested in contributing some of these features if you think they can be done with what you have in place so far.

Well, there isn't too much code in there so I don't think it would be too difficult. Mainly the appearance is controlled by the ec-dot CSS class, the actual dot is the border around a tiny div. You'd probably have to adjust the hit detection if you were to switch to a completely different marker. The items are all created in this loop, so this is where you'd need to change the code to get something else inserted for each one. if the size changes you'll need to adjust the layout code around line 392.

Sure, this should be easy enough to add. The zoom limits are controlled by the MIN_SPAN and MAX_SPAN globals. The start and end date are determined by the data, so I'd probably handle start and end date limits by filtering the data coming in.

Unfortunately from what I can tell, there's no good way to get zoom working reliably across all browsers :( I'd recommend adding zoom buttons for touchpad users, to be honest. You might also want to look at integrating hammer.js more. In theory it supports touchpad zoom, but I had some issues where adding that support took over page scroll. Depending on how you plan to use the event control, that might not be an issue or might be something that you could work around.

On the "limit the zoom level", looking at the globals, I have no clue how to adjust that to fit a certain time frame lol. Im not even sure what those numbers are doing. Seems like it would just come out to be a massive number?

I'm looking to have the graph zoomed all the way out on init. Then limit how far they can zoom in to just months, where it will not start showing times. All my data is in simple dates with no time so they just bunch up on the 0 hour if you zoom into seeing times.

Haha yeah, I guess they aren't exactly self-explanatory. The unit is milliseconds. I would guess that limiting the min zoom to something like 10 days should work for you. So that's

MIN_SPAN = 1000 * 60 * 60 * 24 * 10;

I'd give that a try.
