regex maintain highlights

I love your regex tui. In fact, I'm thinking about building it into nushell because it's so cool.

One thought I had was it would be cool to maintain the color selection of the regex if there's a regular expression in the regex field. I was playing around loading the Cargo.toml as the text string and doing things like (?<key>.*)(?<delim>\s=\s)(?<value>.*) and it highlights great, but when you tab to the text the highlights disappear. I was also thinking that there should be a key combination that exits but prints out the regex to the output since that's what you're tweaking in the tui.

1. I am not quite sure if I understand what you mean by "maintain highlights". Do you mean to say that the highlights are lost when the Test String section is highlighted? Unfortunately, that is because tui library component that ut is using doesn't support spans in text area. At least, not that I know of. So, this might be non trivial.

2. Printing the regex out to stdout on exit is a great idea.

I am not quite sure if I understand what you mean by "maintain highlights".

What I mean is when I launched with ut regex --test Cargo.toml, the Cargo.toml file is shown in the bottom pane without any highlights, as expected. As I start constructing a regex, the highlights appear, which is super cool. So, now I want to tab over to the Test String pane and scroll down to see if all the regex captures everything I'm expecting. When I tab over, all the highlights disappear so scrolling down shows the text but not the highlights from the regex on the rest of the file. So, I'm not sure if my regex is actually capturing things properly in the lower parts of the test file.

Thanks @fdncred, this is an interesting issue. The simplest solution here is make the editing experience of the test string modal...

Cool. I made some changes on my own and created a PR to nushell for it. nushell/nushell#16910

I'm not sure we'll land it because we already have 400+ commands so it's just more maintenance lol, but it was fun playing with it. I'll check out the 0.4.0!

ok, i see you return the regex. great! however, the highlighting doesn't stay highlighted when you switch to it. i changed that in my version for nushell as you can see with the gif. still, this is a great change you've done. i'm happy to close this issue if you like.
