Using 3 M5STACK ATOM Lite with RS-485 base on main branch currently to get power and energy sensors

I got 3xAR07TXFCAWKNEU and 2xAR09TXFCAWKNEU (I have two outdoor units, the config below is for 3 indoor units connected to one of the two outdoor units. I use the similar config for the rest of the units)

I did not use M5Stack ATOM, but I used ESP32 and MAX485 (less than 10$ altogether). The wiring is as follows (gnd not connected on the input to RS485, using hardware tx/rx, note that these cheap RS485 modules are often faulty, the first one just didn't work for me). I used 12v from the "white wide cable/connector" and used stepdown convertor to 5v:

Atom lite + RS485 base work nice for me!
I've tried the solution with a generic esp32 and cheap 485 board, but no data results.
Now I can try for adding some custom sensors, can anyone help me about this?

You can use xlsm i did few days ago. #28 (comment)
Download, allow macros, flush the file with the button.
Make a log from espHome enabling logs with debug_log_messages: true , and save it as txt.
Make sure log is long at least 1 minute to collect all messages moving in the network.

Now filter the file to only show "Sent by" <> Empty
Check if you need that data or you want them to be shown in HASS.

When you find the address you are intrested in, just add a custom_sensor as in the previous post putting the right address (message) and name, unit_of_measurement.

I'am using AR09TXEAAWKNEU indoor unit and 09 TXCAAWKX/EU outdoor unit. F1 and F2 Ports. I use the same config as @hnykda with Atom lite + RS485.

It does work, at first... When I switch the breaker on, the ESP starts and the AC beeps. whithin the first minute i can then start the AC via the ESP32. I do recieve Log data and can change the modes, read the sensors, everything is fine. Then, after some time it only works intermittent. I retightend all srew terminals, repluged the plug as well as the Atom.

Sometimes I can start the AC after a longer periode of time, sometimes i have push this botton multiple times:

Sometimes I can't start it with the ESP at all and have to use the remote control or the stupid Smart Things app (that is the main reason i want local API control)

It looks good to me. Are you sure it's not WiFi reception of atom making problems? I.e. is Atom still showing reasonable RSSI values or can you ping it (to see if the problem is really comm between atom and the AC unit)?

Hi @hnykda thanks for your response. I'am 100% sure its communication between Atom and AC. I can Ping the Atom as well as visit its web interface. Yesterday for example it was working from 9:48 until 22:04. After that i only recieved the "Update" info from log. At 22:15 I switched the AC off via IR remote.

I made mistake of connecting my ESP32 to wrong 12v (I think I got the pin next to it), and it worked "a bit" until it didn't. Just in case you were not on the right pins for the voltage... But that doesn't seem to be the same.

Try different ATOM? Try connecting to a different device (i.e. different AC indoor/outdoor unit)?

Also got my climate finally installed today and had no luck with those cheap converters on generic esp32:

Tried multiple of those modules, removed also the 120 Ohm resistor.
No luck yet.

I can get the Atom, but no RS485 base for it here in Germany, at least not for an acceptable price.

Are there any suggestions for rs485-ttl converters to use on a generic esp32 ?

PS: Funnyly enough:
When I disconnect the esp rx/tx, i see receive data on the converter.
As soon as i plug in the esp no leds anymore.

So any help appreciated.

I should have mentioned that I power the esp at the moment from a external usb power supply.
But actually that shouldnt make a difference imho.
Ordered another one for testing with an MAX13487 chip on it.
Not 100% compatible since it need 5 Volts but hopefully it will work also with 3.3 on an esp.
In another project I saw than one is using it without any issue on an esp32

I also used such RS485 converter from amazon with a nodeMCU before. But in my experience they are much more fragile. In example I used a step down converter from 12V of my AC to 5V. But it did not worked with that. I had to change the step down converter to ~9V to make it work, even both devices are not designed for 9V.

Got it finally to work with an DSD Tech SH-U12 and an generic ESP32 with step down converter to 5V.
Works rock solid so far.

Was a bit complicated to get everything inside the hvac compartment but actually it works :)

Had to used uart 2 to get it to work.
For whatever reason it did not work with uart0.
And yes, I changed the logger: baudrate to 0 ;-)

I actually should specify something. The TX and RX on the converter on the side that connects to the ESP are swapped. Maybe try putting TX to TX and RX to RX

The funny thing is:
If i only conncted the interface to the nasa bus, i can see also rx light flashing when giving it power supply on the ttl side.
So rx flashing.
As soon as i connect the esp, it goes off.
Tried also 2 different interfaces just to sort out a bad one.
Also tried to remove the 120 ohms resistor with no difference.
I guess they are simply not meant for 3.3 volts, even if they state to be and are also not the same, even if they look like....

AR70F09C1AWNEU 2.5kW and AR70F12C1AWNEU 3.5kW 2025 units work flawleslly with M5 Atom Lite and RS485 base. Had some issues at the beginning but reflashing helped. 12V taken from pin 9 GND (white) and 10 Power (pink, not red)

I have AJ100TXJ5KG outdoor unit and 5 indoor units - one AJ035TNNDKG and 4 AR60F09C1AWNEU. Everytghing is connected by F1 and F2 terminals. I can read data comming from indoor units as well as from outdoor unit. BUT! All packets are DataType ::Notification. Even when I send request command to any indoor unit (power, set_target_temp) it works but there is not confirmation form the unit. All packets I saw so far were DataType::Notification...any advice? Aaah - forgot to mention I'm trying to implement NASA2MQTT gateway...it partially works already. I analysed incomming packets from units, but all of them are "Notification" type.

Sorry I don't have time to tear it down rn but I did everything as show in https://docs.samsung-hvac.aran.net.tr/wiki/Hardware-Installation/ with small difference that was 12V taken from pin 9 GND (white) and 10 Power (pink, not red). And thats it - simple as that :)

I have one more hardware question.

Looking at your installation photos and the Samsung MIM-A00N interface board, I'm trying to understand how Samsung designed the indoor unit.

Is the grey ribbon cable with the white connector already part of the indoor unit?

And is this the same connector that the optional Samsung MIM-A00N interface board normally plugs into?

In other words, does your ESPHome adapter simply connect to the Sub PBA connector instead of the MIM-A00N board?

I'm trying to fully understand the hardware before purchasing the units.

I believe that's the connector where 12V and GND is taken - and yes its already included in indoor unit. so M5 esp device is using it as power source. Then F1 and F2 communication ports next to 230V L and N are connected also to M5 esp device.

Since I’m still waiting for my air conditioning units and want to get everything ready in advance, could someone tell me which cables you used to connect to F1/F2 and to the white connector for the 12V tap-off? Will a standard 0.75mm² cable work? The ring terminal connection for F1/F2 is clear enough, but do I need special cables, like Dupont ones?

I’d appreciate an answer.

If the distance is small you can use what you want. If it's long (many meters) use balanced cables (ex ethernet ones)

Everything (incl swing modes) works as a 1:1 replacement of the SmartThings integration, except turning on/off beep and display which I would love to help working on.

✅ Works - NASA, multi-split, one ESP32 for all 4 indoor units

• Outdoor: AJ100TXJ5KG/EU (NASA)
• Indoor: 3× AR07TXHZAWKNEU + 1× AR09TXHZAWKNEU - all on the same bus
• Hardware: M5Stack ATOM Lite + ATOM RS-485 Base, tapped into F1/F2 at one indoor unit
• No V1/V2 on the terminal block, so the ESP is powered from a separate MEAN WELL IRM-30-12ST (85-264V AC → 12V DC) module

Reading and control work for all 4 units from that single ESP. Flashed via esphome run (CLI), integrated through the ESPHome integration in Home Assistant. Thanks for the great work!
