Use scientific mode less eagerly

Currently it is an annoyance most of the time. We should rather allow enlarging columns to some reasonable degree before we turn on scientific mode. The difficulty **might** be (it was when I first implemented this part of the code) to have "stable" column widths when repeatedly toggling scientific mode with float numbers with many digits (like non integer random numbers).
