Using a separate Mac for MIDI Sync & Rekordbox control

laserimouto edited this page May 13, 2023 · 1 revision

These steps detail how to set up MIDI sync for the UDJ-1000 with a PC running VRChat, and a separate DJ computer running MacOS.

Diagram showing overview of tutorial setup

MacOS allows multiple applications to access a single MIDI device, so this setup will work with DJ software like Rekordbox with no additional setup.

Requirements

Mac:

  • Python 3.6+

Windows:

Steps

  1. (Mac) Install mido & rtmidi backend:
pip install mido python-rtmidi
  1. Enable sending MIDI data over the local network (Audio MIDI Setup > Window > Show MIDI Studio, then MIDI Studio > Open MIDI Network Setup)

  1. Run midifilter.py with "Network Mac" as the output port:
python midifilter.py "DDJ-1000" "Network Mac"
  1. midifilter should now print MIDI messages from the DDJ-1000 if everything is setup correctly
  2. (PC) Install & run rtpMidi
  3. Connect to Mac's network MIDI session

  1. (Optional) Verify you are receiving MIDI successfully with MidiView or MidiOX
  2. If testing in Unity Editor, select the network MIDI input under VRChat SDK > Utilities > MIDI and Play
  3. If running in VRChat, you may need to change your launch options to specify the network MIDI input if you have multiple MIDI devices connected, e.g. --midi=<Network MIDI Input Name>
