Omni completion does not work properly

I found that since commit fcd770a, omni completion cannot collect accounts from the "account" command of hledger (ledger) executable.

I confirmed it on both vim and neovim.
I am using hledger.

On the commit a698720, omni completion works properly.

I'm using

• Mac OS 26.1
• neovim v0.12.0(or vim 9.1)
• hledger 1.50.2

my vimrc configuration is below. I'm not using any completion related plugins.

file structure

hledger.journal (main ledger file, contains more than 30 accounts)
├── wallet.journal (included in hledger.journal, contains 3 accounts)

Open wallet.journal in neovim.

:set omnifunc? return omnifunc=LedgerComplete on both commits.

On commit a698720

Type <C-x> --> --^X mode in command line window --> Then Type <C-o> --> Serching.... in command line window --> all 30 accounts are listed in completion window

On commit fcd770a

Type <C-x> --> --^X mode --> Then Type <C-o> --> (Serching.... is not in command line window) --> only 3 accounts exist in current file(buffer) are listed in completion window

This was actually a bug fix, you were relying on previously broken behavior. It was supposed to default to the current ledger file being the "main" one, but was actually silently failing to pass the current buffer name to the hledger accounts command due to variable scoping issues and falling back to hledger's default one, which you happen to have one that it found.

What you need to do if you want to complete accounts from all your ledger files from inside any of them is explicitly set which file you want to be processed. You need to change the default setting:

let g:ledger_main = '%:p'

To something specific to your setup:

let g:ledger_main = 'hledger.journal'

I'm pretty sure that's the answer to your situation so I'll close this, but please do feel free to comment if you have any further issue with this topic, and or open new issues if you have other troubles!

I set g:ledger_main = '~/Desktop/test/main.journal' in my vimrc on the latest branch, but still completion doesn't work as I expected :-/

I tried to figure out what happens on the latest master branch.

I prepared very simple 2 files for the test.

main.journal

include ./wallet.journal

2025-11-18 * test
    expenses:food             100 JPY
    assets:cash:bank

wallet.journal

2025-11-18 * test2

On wallet.journal, :echo s:collect_completion_data() returns empty result.

In contrast, on the commit a698720 (latest commit that completion work properly), :echo s:collect_completion_data() returns result correctly.

Then I found that the conditional expression of if statement of following code in ftplugin/ledger.vim is stated as "if b:ledger_bin".

In most cases, I thinkb:ledger_bin is automatically set to be ledger or hledger or unlet due to autoload/ledger.vim.

if let b:ledger_bin = 'hledger', if b:ledger_bin can never be true, If b:ledger_bin is unlet, b:ledger_bin may raise error (I didn't confirm).

Either way, I thinkledger_accounts_cmd cannot pass the result to the variable accounts and it cause the issue.

FYI
I tested that the following script return false.
