"Maintainers" terminology adopted from containerd is different from the terminology in CNCF
We should try our best to use the same terminology for containerd and Lima to avoid further confusion. Probably containerd's terminology has to be updated.
The meeting focused on the status of Windows support in Lima, ongoing PRs, and release preparations for version 2.2. Akihiro reported that Windows Server and Windows 11 for Intel and ARM were mostly supported, but provisioning scripts were still missing, and Windows 11 ARM on Mac had recently regressed. Jan and Akihiro discussed a PR to drop the Silk Pastorcygpath.exe dependency, with Jan expressing frustration over previous changes and preferring to merge the current PR and handle missing pieces later. They also discussed using HCS/Hyper-V APIs on Windows Home as a possible workaround, with Jan noting the risk that Microsoft might close this in the future. The group reviewed several PRs for 2.2, including bug fixes, documentation updates, and a contribution policy for AI usage, and Jan noted limited availability for in-depth reviews. Anders presented updates on a proxy for Kubernetes packages to reduce download size and improve startup time, as well as work on SBOM generation and license scanning. The conversation ended with brief personal updates and scheduling notes for the next meeting.
Next Steps
Akihiro: Squash and merge the PR to drop the dependency on Silk Pastorcygpath.exe, then Jan will do the follow-up PR for missing pieces.
Akihiro: Assign PR 5221 (TrevorDriver API documentation) to AnselmanAnsuman for review.
Jan: Review PR 5216 (bug fix for ghostguest agent, long-running instances) using deep review tool and approve if no issues are found.
Akihiro: Get one more approval for PR 4994989 (contribution policy for AI usage) and ensure commits are squashed before merging.
Anders: Update documentation for the new proxy additions, including setup instructions and clarifications on scope.
Anders: Update the issue and README for the SBOM tool, addressing format issues and missing fields.
Akihiro: Postpone the terminology change to avoid confusion with CNCCNCF terminology to 2.3 release, pending decision from ContainerD.
Summary
Mentorship Program Status Discussion:
Akihiro and Jan discussed the status of a mentorship program supporting Windows Server and Windows 11 for both Intel and ARM, noting that while most components are complete, provisioning scripts and SFTPSMB (?) server functionality are still pending. Jan expressed a preference to have the current PR merged first before completing the remaining work, and they agreed to wait for the PR to be squashed before proceeding. The team also discussed plans for KubeCon Japan, where AnsmanAnsuman will deliver a lightning talk and Akihiro and AsmaAnsuman will host a project table, with a GA release scheduled for the 21st to align with a CNCF blog article.
Pull Request and Bug Review:
Akihiro discussed several pull requests, including one for TrevorDriver API documentation that needs review from AnselmanAnsuman, and a critical bug fix for ghostguest~ agent geeksleakstranslate (?_) FGFD per folderport connection that needs immediate attention. Jan indicated limited availability due to being busy for three weeks followed by a three-week absence, offering only to review the bug fix using an AI tool rather than running manual tests. Akihiro mentioned that the Windows Libre (Eleven(?)) issue fix and contribution policy for AI usage already have his approval but need additional maintenance team approvals before merging.
Kubernetes Image Proxy Implementation:
Anders discussed implementing a Kubernetes image proxy that reduces startup time from several minutes to 90 seconds for Kubernetes and 30 seconds for K3s by caching image downloads. Jan suggested adding more documentation about setting up the proxy, including information about cache directory management and configuration. Akihiro proposed merging the proxy functionality into PythonLima 2.3 and using HTTP proxy environment variables, though Anders noted that HTTPS proxying doesn't work for system variables set during first boot.
SBOM Tool Limitations Discussion:
Anders discussed issues with the SBOM tool they used for the Lima project, noting that while it creates a more concise SBOM than other tools like CNCF, it has limitations including missing copyright information and problems with cross-compiled binaries (of nerdctl). Akihiro acknowledged these points and mentioned they need to fulfill requirements for license scanning and provide summary information for the monitor. The conversation concluded with informal discussion about Anders' new elephant adoption and the monthly updates received about it.
Meeting Rescheduling and Terminology Discussion:
The team discussed rescheduling the next meeting to either the 28th or 31st, with Jan and Akihiro confirming they could attend on the 31st. Akihiro proposed postponing some work to version 2.3 due to time constraints and mentioned the need to change terminology to avoid confusion with CNCCNCF terminology, suggesting they wait for ContainerD's decision before proceeding.
