Cannot use ctrl+C / ctrl+v when renaming a file or directory. As soon as the ctrl key is pressed, the rename textbox is closed.

Steps to reproduce

Choose any file or directory to be renamed, press F2 or edit menu > rename, the name is shown in a textbox. Trying to copy the file name using ctrl+c, or pasting text from the clipboard using ctrl+v, cannot be done: the textbox is closed as soon as the ctrl key is pressed, so you have to use the mouse to do this (right click, "copy" or "paste").

Expected behavior

The ctrl key should not close the textbox, so copying/pasting with the keyboard could be done.

1. This bug has been reported by several others in Nemo 5.8.5 to 6.0.2.

2. It is fixed in 6.2.8 (the latest version, and possibly 6.1.?) this was in (an update to) Mint 22 at some stage.

3. However, 6.0.2 is the latest version available in any version of Mint 21 which is based on Ubuntu Jammy.

The infuriating thing is that the 'undesirable feature' (to put it politely) was included in an update to Nemo along with some other new but non-essential features.

This works in the latest nemo, nemo 6.0.2 when run in Mint 22.1, and 6.0.2 when run in Mint 21.3 (based on Ubuntu 22.04).

The only way I can reproduce this is if I assign a control key as a global shortcut (such as reassigning the menu shortcut from Super to Control).

Thank you very much indeed. Your comment "...assign a control key..." provided the vital clue. I checked if the Right (as opposed to Left) Control exhibits the same undesirable behaviour: no, only the Left Control key misbehaves, and only in Nemo not in the Desktop (Cinnamon?) or LibreOffice or any other application that I've noticed; I must have somehow accidentally assigned some other function to it in Nemo.

I wasn't aware that the two CTRL keys send different keyboard codes. Having learnt to type over 50 years ago on a Teletype, Ctrl is a left-hand key for me. decades of using those keyboard shortcuts (probably before mice) mean that I don't really think about doing it.

More digging required to find where Nemo stores exceptions to global shortcut keys.

I can confirm this bug happens only with the "left ctrl" key. Thanks for your finding, @gb-dursley

I haven't typed that long <g> but yes, "right ctrl" is almost an unused key for me.

However I haven't changed any key shortcuts at all -- and it happens on Ubuntu Budgie 24.04 and also 24.10 (Budgie 10.9.2), which still uses Nemo 6.0.2.

This causes the focus issue and affects only the left control key.

Yes I did! Disabling this Mouse setting solves the problem. Like so many things in life - so simple when you know!

Thank you so much, I would never have looked at the Mouse settings but instead wasted hours looking at shortcut key assignment in Nemo (and still been left wondering why the problem is replicated in some web pages!) - that too was a clue but one I ignored. The moral is to never ignore a piece of evidence, however apparently trivial, just because it doesn't fit your hypothesis.

I asked much the same question on the Mint forum, so I'll post your genius solution there too for the benefit of others.

I can't think of any reason why I would have enabled the setting, I suspect it is/was a default setting on a new install.
I don't fiddle with settings unless I have good reason.

Wow. Thanks muchly @mtwebster -- I had it too, and once disabled the problem was gone.

I don't know if the same behaviour happens on other programs using this listview (changing the item's text "in place" instead of using a secondary window with a text box), that'd be something to keep an eye on.
