Signpost 0.1.0 is the first release: a link chooser for the COSMIC desktop. Make it your default handler for web links, and every link you open from any app shows a small picker of your browsers, each browser profile, and the other apps that can open it.

What's in it

  • Each profile of a browser with several is a tile of its own, when Signpost can read them, in Chrome, Chromium, Brave, Edge, Vivaldi, Helium, Firefox, LibreWolf, Zen and Floorp, and in the Flathub versions of all of them but Helium.
  • Keyboard first: arrows and Enter, number keys for the first nine tiles, Ctrl+Enter to keep the picker open, Ctrl+C to copy the link, Esc to close it.
  • A menu on every tile (right-click, the Menu key, or touch and hold) opens the link and keeps the picker open, or copies the link, and adds a private window and the app's own actions that can open the link, where there are any.
  • Links wait their turn while the picker is open, and a link sent twice at once opens once.
  • Your default browser stays yours: nothing changes until you press Use Signpost, and Restore defaults puts back the browser you had.
  • A .deb package for Debian, Ubuntu and Pop!_OS, and a Flatpak bundle for COSMIC on any distribution.

Install

Ubuntu 24.04, Pop!_OS 24.04, Debian 13 or newer, on x86-64:

sudo apt install ./signpost_0.1.0_amd64.deb

Flatpak (the runtime comes from Flathub):

flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists --user flathub https://dl.flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo
flatpak install --user ./signpost-0.1.0.flatpak

The Flatpak can read all your files and starts apps outside its sandbox, because the picker has to see your apps and browser profiles. The README lists what it can do. Install one package or the other, not both.

From source (Git, Rust 1.93 or newer, just, and libwayland-dev, libxkbcommon-dev and pkg-config):

git clone --branch v0.1.0 https://github.com/lkbddh/signpost.git && cd signpost
just build && sudo just install

First use

Open Signpost from the app library and press Use Signpost in its settings window. Then open a link in any app, and the picker appears. To go back, press Restore defaults in the same window, and do that before you uninstall.
