OpenCV 5.0.0 Released

📢 News: OpenCV 5.0.0 Released

OpenCV recently released version 5.0.0, which introduces several breaking changes to the API (e.g., cv2.AKAZE_create() was removed).

For this reason, Shine Stacker will continue to pin to OpenCV 4.x for the foreseeable future to ensure stability.

Why this matters for Shine Stacker

OpenCV 5.x brings some exciting improvements, including:

• Native 16-bit LUT support - currently, Shine Stacker implements 16-bit LUTs internally; using OpenCV's native support could simplify the code and improve performance.
• New data types and better HDR support

Migration plans

I'm closely following OpenCV 5.x developments. When the following conditions are met, I'll plan a migration:

• Official pre-built wheels for Python 3.14 (currently in development)
• The API stabilizes (avoiding further breaking changes)
• 16-bit support is fully mature for all algorithms used by Shine Stacker
