Naming: candidates, reasoning, and availability research (parked) #3

Context

Naming exploration for this project (currently learning-agent). Parking this for later — picking it back up when the name matters more than execution. This issue captures the candidates, the reasoning, and the availability research so nothing is lost.

The product (for naming purposes): an open-source learning engine that teaches any subject through Socratic questioning, verified citations, active recall, and graduated difficulty — plus a future commercial "Pathways" marketplace where educators author/sell curated learning pathways that run inside the tool. Target market: online course / workshop / cohort / lab creators (the creator economy), not classroom/formal education.

The full candidate matrix is included as a table at the end of this issue.

Guiding principle

The name should be an English word/name that acts as a conduit for an Islamic value — accessible to the English-speaking majority on the surface, with a deeper root underneath. Avoid hiding virtues behind Arabic words inaccessible to most. And it must be distinctive/defensible — "learning agent" is the category, not a brand.

Leading candidate: Lantern → likely OpenLantern

  • Lantern (root: نور nur, "knowledge is light"). Chosen because a lantern is a carried, personal, configurable object — each learner holds their own light and adjusts it. Most ed-tech names are abstract institutional nouns; a carried object is rare and ownable. It also mirrors the pedagogy: light the next step of the path, one concept at a time.
  • Problem: "Lantern" is heavily contested in software.
    • Lantern VPN (getlantern.com, ~150M users) owns the software namespace.
    • Domains: lantern.com/.io/.ai/.co/.sh/.dev/.app/.study(learner-facing) etc. all taken; every get/use/try/learn+lantern compound gone.
    • Multiple live USPTO LANTERN marks (BAS US Inc., The Lantern Group, Lantern PBC).
  • Resolution → OpenLantern. Prefixing "Open" solves multiple problems at once:
    • Rides the "open" trend correctly (open + a distinctive brand, à la OpenSea/opencode — not open + a generic category like OpenLearn).
    • Keeps the Lantern brand + metaphor world.
    • Domains wide open: openlantern.ai, openlantern.io, openlantern.build, openlantern.quest all confirmed free (.com/.org taken).
    • Distinguishes from Lantern VPN in search/category.
    • Suggested usage: spoken brand stays "Lantern"; formal/GitHub/domain = OpenLantern; agent = lantern:learn.

"Open + learning" trap (why not a generic Open name)

The space is dominated by incumbents — Open edX (Harvard/MIT OSS LMS, 100M+ learners), OpenLearn (Open University), OpenLearning.com. Standalone open-names are also taken: opentutor.ai, openlore.ai/.com, openstudy.ai, openquest.ai, openpathway.com — all registered. Generic "open + category" = crowded, taken, undefensible.

Other candidates considered

Heritage + verification

  • Verilysidq/sahih (truth/authenticity) + literally contains "verify". Killed by Alphabet's Verily Life Sciences (verily.com).

Closest to the act/goal of learning

  • Grasp (fahm/fiqh, understanding) — the act of getting it.
  • Rooted (rusukh, "those firmly grounded in knowledge", Q3:7; tree-with-firm-roots, Q14:24) — depth/mastery; opens a tree/roots/fruit imagery world; strong philosophical match. Not yet availability-checked.
  • Fathom (tafaqquh) — deep understanding; collision risk (Fathom Analytics / the meeting notetaker).
  • Discern (furqan/basirah) — distinguishing truth; ties to the Jadal/challenge step.
  • Recall (dhikr/tadhakkur, remembrance) — double bridge: learning-science mechanic + Quranic.
  • Cultivate (tarbiyah) — education as nurturing the whole person.

Ken (strong contender, dropped)

  • Literally means "to know" (Scots/Old English verb) and "the range of one's knowledge" ("beyond my ken"). One syllable, ownable; Barbie/Kenneth association judged manageable via visual identity.
  • Dropped because: in-niche collision — KenAI (eduken.ai) is already an "AI learning companion"; plus Ken42/KAI in edu and getken.ai. ken.ai and all short variants taken (only ken.study, learnken.com free). Same shelf, not a different store.

Brand-system / feature names (the metaphor world)

If Lantern/OpenLantern sticks, these name the parts:

  • Summit — a topic / mastery goal (darajat, raised by degrees, Q58:11).
  • Stations — graduated stages (maqamat).
  • Route / Pathways — the standardised, shareable, sellable learning resource (manhaj/matn); this is the marketplace unit.
  • Quest — the journey/seeking framing (talib al-'ilm); also a free domain TLD that folds metaphor into the URL (openlantern.quest).

Domain availability snapshot (verify at registrar before buying)

  • OpenLantern: openlantern.ai ✅, openlantern.io ✅, openlantern.build ✅, openlantern.quest ✅ free; .com/.org taken.
  • Lantern (plain): confirmed free were lantern.build, lantern.courses, lantern.study, lantern.wiki, lantern.help, lantern.fm. Journey-themed free: lantern.quest, lantern.voyage (verify). lantern.guide/.tours/.live/.studio/.camp taken.
  • No literal .path/.trail/.summit/.route/.climb TLDs exist.

Current recommendation (to revisit)

OpenLantern, domain openlantern.ai (or openlantern.quest for the journey metaphor), spoken as "Lantern". Before committing later: pressure-test "OpenLantern" for product/trademark collisions, and decide repo/plugin/agent rename (learning-agentlantern, agent → lantern:learn).
