Feature Request: Improve usability of date_range control for long time spans

Currently, the date_range control becomes difficult to use when the date span is large (e.g., exceeding 6-12 months). Selecting a specific day requires a lot of clicks for the user.

Thanks for kicking off the discussion. Is there a specific user interface you had in mind for accomplishing this kind of task that we could potentially use for reference / inspiration?
