I wrote about the issues facing GitHub GFM implementers now that LaTeX is part of the markdown Universe.

I think there is a miscommunication. The point of my article is really about how the parser handles single-dollar-sign tokens in a markdown paragraph, not about KaTeX support per se. In particular, this appears to be relevant:

In the article, I tried to emphasize the fact that the Rust crap (@kivikakk/comrak) that GitHub claims to use is considered, at least by myself, as the de facto standard for GFM-compliant parsers (largely because GitHub has mandated it across the board without any opt-out process).

Deviance from the behavior of that code introduces interoperability issues between the various "katex-as-an-extension" implementations.

Ya that's a problem with all of markdown. See https://github.com/markedjs/marked/blob/master/docs/broken.md. It was written before CommonMark was a thing but CommonMark still has many things that aren't spec'd (which is the whole reason for all the tests in https://github.com/markedjs/marked/tree/master/test/specs/new).
