Command lines that are too long cause Windows tools to fail

One example I found had a command line length of about 35200 characters.

You see an error like this

ERROR: (Bam.Core.Exception) 'The filename or extension is too long': process filename 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 12.0\VC\bin\x86_amd64\link.exe'

The solution is to use a response file.
