v0.1.6

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 16 Sep 09:21

New

  • Right-click a selection to Highlight or Erase. Selecting a sentence or word and right-clicking now shows a context menu with Copy, Highlight (with color picker), and — if the selection overlaps an existing highlight — Erase. This previously only worked on PDF pages; it now works on EPUB pages too.

Fixes

  • The highlighter's color swatches no longer pop open automatically while reading. They used to auto-reveal on any text selection, which fought the toolbar's hover-to-reveal behavior. Selecting text no longer opens the toolbar on its own — use the right-click menu above, or hover the toolbar as usual.

v0.1.5

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 16 Sep 08:45

Fixes

  • EPUB links inside a chapter now actually navigate. Clicking a table-of-contents entry, a footnote, or a cross-chapter link in the book's own content used to no-op — only TOC-sidebar clicks worked. All in-book links now jump to the right page; external http(s) links open in your system browser instead.
  • HUD toolbar and Settings button no longer swallow clicks in their own empty margin. Clicking near an icon, but not quite on it, could silently miss and land on the page underneath instead.
  • EPUB highlights now land on the correct line, and the eraser works again. A CSS rule meant to cap embedded book images/illustrations was also shrinking the invisible layer highlights are drawn on, so highlights could render off the selected line — worse near the bottom of a page — and eraser clicks aimed at a highlight could miss it entirely.
  • The highlighter color swatch no longer stays "selected" while the eraser is active. It now only shows as active while the highlighter tool itself is in use.

Toolbar changes

  • The highlighter's color/eraser flyout no longer expands by default — hover the highlighter button to reveal it.
  • The HUD toolbar moved to the right edge (it was overlapping the table-of-contents panel on the left) and now horizontally aligns with the Settings button.
  • Hovering either the HUD toolbar or the Settings button now reveals both — no need to re-aim your cursor between them.
  • The HUD toolbar hides automatically while the Settings panel is open, instead of overlapping it.

v0.1.4

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 16 Sep 06:16

Fixes

  • macOS: "Open With" now actually opens the file. Finder's Open With → Paperweight (and open -a Paperweight file.pdf) launched the app with an empty window instead of the document. macOS delivers the file via a system event, not a command-line argument, and Paperweight was only checking the latter. Fixed for both a fresh launch and for opening a second file while Paperweight is already running.
  • Smoother zoom. Ctrl+scroll / trackpad pinch-to-zoom no longer queues a full page re-layout per wheel tick — it's capped to one per frame.

Under the hood

  • Annotations (highlights, comments) now save to one file per document instead of one shared file that got rewritten in full on every single edit. This also fixes a real bug: having the same document open in two windows could silently overwrite one window's annotations with the other's stale copy.
  • EPUB reading now releases pages once you've scrolled far past them, instead of keeping every visited page's chapter content in memory for the rest of the session — matching how PDF pages already behaved.

v0.1.3

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 15 Sep 21:19

What's new in 0.1.3

  • Fixed EPUB table of contents — clicking a chapter in Contents always jumped to page 1 instead of the actual chapter. Chapter links now resolve to the correct page.
  • README refresh — app icon and live version/downloads badges at the top of the README.

Features

  • Open PDF and EPUB, in tabs — keep multiple documents open, drag a tab out to pop it into its own window
  • Scroll through the whole document; zoom and fit-to-page
  • Contents / table of contents, when the file has one
  • Bookmarks — reopens the last file if it's still on the device
  • Find text
  • Select text and copy; PDF highlighter and page comments — stored locally, never written into the file
  • Light, dark, or auto appearance
  • Ctrl+P — send to printer (system dialog)
  • Password-locked PDFs — enter the password in the popup to open
  • Optional pomodoro timer
  • In-app notification when a new release is out

No editing, forms, DRM, or writing into the original file.

Install

Windows

Needs WebView2 (already on most Windows 10/11 PCs).

  • Portable — download paperweight.exe and double-click to run. Can't register as the default app.
  • Installer — download Paperweight_0.1.3_x64-setup.exe. After installing, set Paperweight as default from Settings → Apps → Default apps → Paperweight, or right-click a file → Open with.

macOS

There's no signed macOS download in this release — the app isn't code-signed or notarized, so a downloaded .dmg/.app gets Gatekeeper-quarantined and macOS refuses to open it. Build it yourself instead:

git clone https://github.com/markyip/Paperweight.git
cd Paperweight/tauri
npm install
npm run tauri build

Needs Node.js, Rust, and Xcode command-line tools (xcode-select --install). The app lands at tauri/src-tauri/target/release/bundle/macos/Paperweight.app — drag it to /Applications.

v0.1.2

Choose a tag to compare

@github-actions github-actions released this 15 Sep 19:56

What's new in 0.1.2

  • Update checker — Paperweight now checks GitHub Releases on launch and shows a themed, dismissible notification when a newer version is out. Dismissing it snoozes the check for 4 weeks.
  • macOS titlebar redesign — native-style traffic light buttons (close / minimize / zoom), left-aligned, replacing the Windows-style controls macOS builds previously inherited.
  • Windows default-app fix — installing Paperweight no longer wipes out your existing default PDF/EPUB handler. The installer now correctly restores whatever app was default before, so your prior default (and its Explorer thumbnails) keep working.

No editing, forms, DRM, or writing into the original file.

Install

Windows

Needs WebView2 (already on most Windows 10/11 PCs).

  • Portable — download paperweight.exe and double-click to run. Can't register as the default app.
  • Installer — download Paperweight_0.1.2_x64-setup.exe. After installing, set Paperweight as default from Settings → Apps → Default apps → Paperweight, or right-click a file → Open with.

macOS

There's no signed macOS download in this release — the app isn't code-signed or notarized, so a downloaded .dmg/.app gets Gatekeeper-quarantined and macOS refuses to open it ("Paperweight is damaged and can't be opened"). Build it yourself instead — it takes a couple of minutes and the result isn't quarantined:

git clone https://github.com/markyip/Paperweight.git
cd Paperweight/tauri
npm install
npm run tauri build

Needs Node.js, Rust, and Xcode command-line tools (xcode-select --install). The app lands at tauri/src-tauri/target/release/bundle/macos/Paperweight.app — drag it to /Applications.
