User Guide

Learn how to use Aletheia effectively to understand language context and etymology.


Core Functionality

Analyzing Text

  1. Select text on any webpage by clicking and dragging
  2. Right-click to open the context menu
  3. Click "Explain with AI"
  4. Read the analysis in the overlay

Understanding the Response

Aletheia provides three key pieces of information:

Signal Indicator

A visual indicator showing the educational context level:

Level Meaning
🟢 Green Neutral terminology
🟡 Yellow Some historical context worth knowing
🟠 Orange Significant etymological backstory
🔴 Red Strong historical/cultural implications

Etymology Gem

A concise one-liner capturing the most important historical insight about the term.

Account & Authentication

Signing In

  1. Click the Aletheia icon in your browser toolbar
  2. Click Sign In with LinkedIn
  3. Authorize Aletheia on LinkedIn's OAuth page
  4. You're signed in — a JWT token is stored locally for 24 hours

Signing Out

  1. Click the Aletheia icon in your toolbar
  2. Click Sign Out
  3. Your local token is cleared

Why LinkedIn?

LinkedIn OAuth provides identity verification without requiring a separate account. Aletheia stores only your LinkedIn user ID (a pseudonymous identifier) — no profile data, no connections, no activity.

Upgrading

  1. Click the Aletheia icon → Upgrade
  2. Complete checkout via Stripe
  3. Your tier updates immediately on next sign-in

Rate Limit Reached?

When you hit a limit, you'll see a message indicating which window (hourly, daily, or monthly) was exceeded and when it resets. You can upgrade to premium for higher limits.


Best Practices

What to Analyze

Aletheia works best with:

  • Individual words or short phrases
  • Proper nouns and place names
  • Idioms and expressions
  • Technical terminology
  • Historical references

Selection Tips

  • Be specific: Select the exact term you want to understand
  • Include context: For phrases, select the complete expression
  • Avoid long passages: Keep selections under ~50 words for best results

Privacy Considerations

What Aletheia Does

  • Sends selected text to AWS for AI analysis
  • Authenticates you via LinkedIn OAuth (one-time)
  • Tracks usage counts per tier (anonymized in logs)
  • Stores your preferences locally in browser storage

What Aletheia Does NOT Do

  • Track your browsing history
  • Store your selected text permanently
  • Share data with third parties
  • Access pages you don't explicitly analyze
  • Store your LinkedIn profile information
