Kiln 1.0.0

@matthew-kissinger matthew-kissinger released this 06 Oct 21:19
fda71ac

Kiln 1.0.0 is published on npm as @instruktlabs/kiln. Normal installation selects stable:

npm install @instruktlabs/kiln

This release ships the compiled ESM SDK and TypeScript declarations, kiln CLI, kiln-mcp server, managed asset workspaces and skills, and the kiln-engine local plugin for Claude Code and Codex. The installation guide, SDK guide and plugin guide cover setup and use.

Upgrading from 0.10 or earlier changes the package name from the private @kiln/engine identity. The package root is now the SDK; the CLI uses its executable. Full optimization now preserves rigid groups and exposes its compatibility limits. Review the migration guide and complete changelog before upgrading. Experimental APIs remain explicitly documented.

Public-registry installation passed on Linux, Windows and macOS Intel/Apple Silicon. Both local plugin clients installed the stable package and completed render/save/reopen/export checks. Managed workspace upgrades from 0.10.0 and 1.0.0-rc.1 preserve saved assets and compatible customizations, and refuse conflicting edits before changing files.

The authenticated public hosted service and vendor directory submissions remain in progress. This package release does not announce their availability.

Kiln 0.10.0

Choose a tag to compare

@matthew-kissinger matthew-kissinger released this 02 Oct 17:18
9375d04

Kiln 0.10.0 is the v1 readiness release: the stdio server serves protocol revision 2026-07-28 beside the 2025 handshakes and answers before the engine loads, the three record tools are flat objects with an action field, every tool result is bounded and leads with its verdict, and the generated workspace guide and skills are shorter.

This is a source and site release for dogfooding, with the package tarball attached. kiln-engine-0.10.0.tgz below is the package the engine CI built from this commit with npm pack --ignore-scripts; nothing is published to the npm registry, and registry publication remains planned for v1.0 after feedback.

Changes

  • Protocol revision 2026-07-28 served from a thin entry (dist/mcp-server.mjs) that answers initialize, server/discover and tools/list before the engine loads; durable programRef handles; a configuration problem is a tool result that names the next step, not a dead server.
  • kiln_project, kiln_material and kiln_review are one flat object each with an action enum; nested records are opaque in the schema and served by Discovery shape entries; every input schema within 5,000 bytes; the server instructions 692 characters.
  • Every result is one-line JSON led by the verdict, with grouped findings, bounded at 20,000 characters by default and 40,000 at most, with lean, compact and full detail (KILN_RESULT_DETAIL); compact comparisons, receipts and animation frames; six-decimal rounding.
  • Errors teach: ok: false is an MCP error naming the cause and the next call, with no local path; an unknown key is answered with the keys the tool takes; a nested record that fails to parse names its Discovery shape; a wrong camera subject is answered with the shot's fix.
  • Lean standing knowledge: the generated workspace guide at 4,461 characters, CLAUDE.md as @AGENTS.md, one skill registry per harness, the author skill under 16,000 characters, bun run check:skills.
  • Follow-ups from the live sessions: generated code runs in strict mode and this is allowed inside object-literal and class methods; the bare "Generated asset execution was rejected." carries engine-owned advice; kiln_material accepts resourceId as an alias of materialId; a project revision implies its material pins and explicit pins win; JSON asset resources are served minified; generated Antigravity workspaces default to lean results; kiln asset <id> reads the newest revision and kiln save --help prints its own usage.
  • packs/troy/ records the Troy pack, in progress and unreviewed by the owner: sources and manifests at each pick's newest revision, the project's pinned materials, the scene recomposer and the inventory, with every revision's GLB and preview on the public asset bucket. Nothing of it is on the site.

Changes that a client or an embedder observes are marked Breaking in the changelog; the migration notes list what an existing author will notice.

Install

Download kiln-engine-0.10.0.tgz and SHA256SUMS.txt from this release and check the tarball against the checksum file (sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS.txt beside it; its SHA-256 is e1ce85d7a27106cc2706bb23d2707e3904e214cf4afda329da5dbfceabf60c9f). Then, with Node.js 20.15.0+ on the 20.x line or 22.2.0 and later:

mkdir kiln-install
cd kiln-install
npm init -y
npm install /absolute/path/to/kiln-engine-0.10.0.tgz --omit=dev --include=optional
npm exec --offline -- kiln-init ../my-assets --harness opencode # or claude, codex, hermes, agy, copilot, cursor-agent
cd ../my-assets
# Follow START.md for your harness

Existing workspaces: read the migration notes, then run the new installation's kiln-init --check and --upgrade. The installation guide has the harness table, the Mac notes and the build-from-source path; the tarball needs no Bun, source checkout or build step.

Validation

Released commit: 9375d0498139827efefc2bd57749b3d14a7bda42, the squash merge of PR #129.

  • Engine CI and Website CI passed on that commit. The engine run covers typecheck, lint, the unit tests with the coverage gate on Linux and Windows, the render-service contracts, the package candidate, installed-package checks on every supported platform and installed software Vulkan rendering.
  • The attached tarball is that Engine CI run's artifact. Its SHA-256 matches the run's checksum, the six attached receipts and a local npm pack --ignore-scripts of the same tree (8,791,989 bytes, 719 entries).
  • The receipts are the installed-package checks (17 each, all passed): Linux x64 with Node 20.15.0, 22.2.0 and 24.20.0; macOS arm64 and x64 with Node 22.23.2; Windows x64 with Node 22.23.2. A receipt qualifies the tarball it names.
  • Before the merge, the offline gate on the branch and a fresh clone of it passed every step: 3134 tests pass and 2 skip, coverage functions 95.15% and lines 92.45%, render-service 78 pass, a rebuild identical to the committed dist/, and generated workspaces for Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode and Antigravity each answering tools/list with 17 tools.
  • Fifty live sessions across Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode and Antigravity on this engine are recorded in the readiness report: what they found, what was fixed with a test, and what was left and why.

A site deployment is a separate step and does not change any asset's review status; software Vulkan checks do not qualify every physical GPU. See the changelog, the migration notes and PR #129.

Kiln 0.9.0

Choose a tag to compare

@matthew-kissinger matthew-kissinger released this 01 Oct 16:43
143ecba

Kiln 0.9 adds optional projects, a material library and Live Review to standalone asset authoring, with a refreshed site for trying the assets in complete scenes.

This is a source and site release for dogfooding. No npm registry publication or separately published package is included. Package publication remains planned for v1.0 after feedback.

Changes

  • Optional immutable projects, pinned material dependencies, procedural material presets, editable project delivery and retained CLI/MCP review history. Standalone assets continue to work without a project.
  • Calibrated review lighting, compact tool results, improved geometry and animation diagnostics, and the reviewed authoring/export fixes listed in the changelog.
  • Declared LOD chains exported with MSFT_lod, plus global and per-part inspection in the local viewer.
  • Current Farm and Golden Gate scenes, reusable vehicle downloads with live paint controls, and the Foundry Floor preview with a campus, registered fab cutaway and container transport. Foundry remains in production.
  • Driving and walking controls, touch controls, revised vehicle lamps and farmer clothing, and Blender/Unity handoff documentation.
  • Updated README captures of the three scenes and all six vehicles in varied colours.
  • Maintained scene source integrated into this repository, pinned public asset inputs, and the site migrated to Cloudflare Pages.

To try the engine, check out this tag and follow Build a local package. Review the migration guide before upgrading an existing workspace. The source archives below are the downloads for this release; no separate package tarball is attached.

Validation

Released commit: 143ecba4bccc39235c15e2b309d6ac7aad6388bd.

  • Engine CI, Website CI and Scenes CI all passed on that commit. Engine qualification includes both exporter settings, coverage, render-service contracts, installed packages on Linux, Windows and macOS Intel/Apple Silicon, and installed software Vulkan rendering.
  • The clean-main site build passed validation of 200 pages and the pinned asset receipts. All 2,674 served files matched their recorded hashes on both the Cloudflare production URL and kilnstudio.tools. All 480 required public asset objects also passed hash verification.
  • Live Foundry entry, deferred interior loading, exit and restored focus passed on WebGPU and WebGL2. The deployed gallery paint control works, with the reported overlapping label corrected.
  • The deployed build identity is available at build-info.json. Its artifact manifest SHA-256 is ffcd594bf3be891b0cbea9e9fa039fa8db2afbfa3bdc69cde90f4f5d6ec7b9ad.

Asset review status remains specific to each asset. A site deployment does not change that status, and software Vulkan checks do not qualify every physical GPU. See the changelog, engine handoff guide and integration PR.

Kiln 0.8.0

@matthew-kissinger matthew-kissinger released this 23 Sep 23:41

Kiln 0.8.0

Kiln 0.8 unifies asset authoring around Discovery, sharpens geometry and review tools, and separates the optional native agent from the harness-agnostic CLI/MCP workflow.

This is a source release. The tagged archive includes committed runtimes and can be installed with npm without building with Bun. No npm registry publication or separately built package is included in this release. The older v0.7.0 packaged download remains available on its own release page.

Changes

  • Discovery replaces category selection and kiln_list_primitives: search ordinary modeling language, browse helpers and optional recipes, and retrieve exact contracts. No search model, GPU or API key is required.
  • Improved scale-sensitive geometry checks, sweeps, CSG, UV ownership and reusable assemblies. Unsupported QA obligations remain explicitly incomplete.
  • Exported edit comparisons and animation review provide more precise evidence without claiming physical correctness or animation smoothness from incomplete checks.
  • The optional renderer is included in Kiln, supports shared local service and remote routing, and reports view fidelity. CPU views are geometry evidence, not material evidence.
  • Optional Strands dependencies and native workflow context remain separate from CLI/MCP skills.
  • Original and Runtime GLB downloads, companion metadata, and native animation controls are available in the viewers. Runtime export moves review metadata; it does not optimize meshes or textures.
  • End-user Node requirements are separate from development pins: Node 20.15+ on 20.x or 22.2+ for CLI/MCP; native Strands requires 22.2+. Installed commands do not need Bun.

Install this version

Run in a new installation directory:

mkdir kiln-install
cd kiln-install
npm init -y
npm install "https://github.com/matthew-kissinger/kiln/archive/refs/tags/v0.8.0.tar.gz" --omit=dev --include=optional
npm exec --offline -- kiln-init ../my-assets --harness opencode
cd ../my-assets

Follow the generated START.md. See the README for other harnesses. The automatic source archives below are the downloads for this release; there is no separate package .tgz, package checksum attachment, or platform-receipt attachment. Older installation documentation about those attachments applies to the earlier packaged release.

For existing installations, read the migration guide. Retired category selectors and list-primitives interfaces fail explicitly rather than silently falling back. Use workspace --check and --upgrade as documented, then restart the harness.

Validation and limits

The tagged commit is c92d3618f01141f8ddaf0e86fb688dc8af710634. Main CI and gallery deployment passed. CI package qualification covers Linux, Windows, and macOS Intel/Apple Silicon; the public tagged archive also passed 17 installed CLI/MCP/export checks on Windows Node 20.15.0. Gallery deployment checks covered all 320 download URLs across 80 assets.

Physical AMD, Intel and Apple GPU qualification and broader live Strands provider testing remain open. Historical gallery assets are unvetted showcases, not golden examples. See the changelog and implementation PR.

Kiln 0.7.0

Choose a tag to compare

@matthew-kissinger matthew-kissinger released this 12 Sep 18:01
44b4bc8

Kiln gives coding agents tools to build, inspect, and revise procedural 3D assets. Keep the JavaScript source, export a GLB for your project.

Download kiln-engine-0.7.0.tgz and follow the installation guide. Node.js is enough for the packaged CLI and MCP tools; Bun is needed to build from source.

The fix most likely to have bitten you

Under Bun, a kiln command could exit 0 having written nothing — no output, no error. kiln save did it reproducibly under concurrency. The command was not failing; it was still running, and Bun's event loop went idle and exited before main() settled. Measured on an 8-way repro: 7 of 8 runs produced empty output before, 8 of 8 produce full output now.

The renderer ships, and starts itself

render-service/ is now part of the distribution, and --render auto starts it on demand instead of finding it or not. Material-faithful GPU views are reachable without running a service by hand, and every render result carries viewFidelity so a geometry-flat CPU image is never mistaken for evidence about materials.

Review surfaces stopped misreporting correct assets

A run of fixes where the asset was right and the surface describing it was wrong: isolate is honored on the GPU path, artifact identity no longer tracks the serializer's version, a preset's shadows.type now actually selects a filter, and the GPU material conformance check runs for the first time — it had been asserting against an untextured render because its own network guard blocked the only path a texture had in.

Smaller clone, five harnesses, published skills

History was rewritten to drop 288 MB of gallery renders and launch video no tool reads: a clone is 60 MB, down from 440 MB. A bare clone now works with Claude Code, Codex, opencode, hermes, or agy, and the skills are fetchable over HTTP at /.well-known/agent-skills/.

Current toolchain

Bun 1.4.2, Node 22.23.2, npm 12.0.2, three.js r186 — and the CommonJS load path r186 exposed is gone.

How this build was verified

Every merge to main must pass eight required checks across four platforms: typecheck/lint/test on Linux and Windows, the render service's tests, and the packaged distribution exercised on Linux, Windows, macOS arm64, and macOS x64. The attached receipts are those runs, from the single CI run that produced this tarball — each one records the sha256 of the exact .tgz above, and each was verified against it before publication.

1,872 tests pass offline with no model calls. Lint reports nothing over 483 files. Coverage is ratcheted at 94% functions / 92.1% lines, measured over src/ alone.

Known limits

webgpu 0.6.1 is deliberately not in this release. It carries a real fix, but arrived with a same-day third_party/dawn bump to "latest", and CI installs the render service with --ignore-scripts — so its tests prove the package resolves, not that the native binding behaves. It ships after a GPU smoke, not on faith.

GPU output depends on your driver and is not covered by the checks above. Structural checks find problems; they do not establish visual quality. Review scale, performance, and appearance in your target scene.

Kiln gives coding agents tools to build, inspect, and revise procedural 3D assets. Keep the JavaScript source and export a GLB for your project.

This public snapshot includes short, persistent source references, targeted edits, configurable camera views, geometry modifiers, project-local skills, and CLI, MCP, and TypeScript interfaces. The redesigned site includes an interactive collection with source downloads and model credits.

Download kiln-engine-0.6.0.tgz below and follow the installation guide. Node.js is enough to use the packaged CLI and MCP tools; Bun is needed to build Kiln from source. The package retains version 0.6.0 and is distributed here rather than through the npm registry.

The attached package receipts identify the exact archive tested on Windows, Linux, and hosted Apple Silicon/Intel Macs. They cover CPU rendering and the CLI/MCP source-edit-export workflow; optional GPU rendering and individual desktop harness setups have separate requirements. SHA256SUMS.txt records the release files.

The gallery is curated, not a model ranking. Its credits and revision histories distinguish original model programs from later repairs. Mechanical Peacock and Deco Radio include maintainer refinements. More setup reports, geometry helpers, skills, and example programs are welcome.
