PhantomRec was originally released as RetroRec (v1.0 through v1.7). The name was changed in v1.8. All recordings and settings from previous versions are fully compatible.
PhantomRec is a free, portable, and invisible screen recorder for Windows. It captures your desktop at a smooth 60 FPS with system audio, then converts the recording into a compact, high-quality file — all without slowing down your computer.
No GPU? No problem. Old laptop? It works. PhantomRec is designed to run on any Windows PC from Vista to Windows 11, from a dual-core budget machine to a high-end workstation.
PhantomRec doesn't care what hardware you have. It cares what OS you run — because your OS determines what capture APIs are available.

All capture methods write a lossless master file at the native frame rate. The final video is automatically converted to a constant 60 fps x264 file, regardless of the source frame rate.
PhantomRec uses a two-stage ghost pipeline — the same architecture that made Fraps legendary, rebuilt for modern lossless codecs.
Stage 1 — Live Capture (Ut Video lossless, 1 thread, ~5% CPU):
The screen is captured and encoded with Ut Video, a mathematically lossless codec that processes each frame independently. CPU usage stays flat at ~5% regardless of on-screen action. Duplicate frames are skipped automatically. No GPU encoding means no stop‑button freeze.
Stage 2 — Post‑Convert (x264 ultrafast, all cores, after you stop):
When you press stop, PhantomRec converts the lossless master to a crisp, compact x264 file at 60 fps using all CPU cores — when your system is idle. You get NVENC‑quality file sizes without needing a GPU.

- All tested on a real 200 GB HDD with zero lag spikes.
- Audio and video now start at the exact same moment (using a sync event), removing any permanent offset.
- Works for both initial recording and after a pause/resume.
- FFmpeg now runs with its own minimized console (
CREATE_NEW_CONSOLE) — this guarantees properCTRL_BREAKhandling and eliminates the “accordion effect” timeline distortion that caused stuttering in earlier versions.
- Removed dead variables and functions (legacy MPEG‑4 quality settings, unused thread count parameters).
- The source is now easy to read and contribute to.
- Custom backgrounds, fonts, animated GIFs, font colour/size — all hot‑reloaded from
Settings.ini. - No more UI text ghosting or stacking.
- Thread‑safe UI updates (core callbacks are marshalled to the main thread).
